Show 1 REVIEW, Healthful Snacks Are Mothers Homework Start of a new school term signals a new menu problem for Mother. Lunch? Not, nowadays, much of a difficulty, because In most cases Mother can count on the school cafeteria or lunch program to provide a meal for the youngsters. Breakfast or dinner? Not really a new worry for Mother, because shes alerted, to the need for a better dinbreakfast, a ner for all the family. How about snacks? Now, theres the meal or meals that demands extra attention from Mom. Even more than summer play, the activities of school season tend tp create hearty between-meappetites, and a real need for extra energy, in students of all ages. Its Mothers problem to see that snack-tlm- e hunger Is satisfied with wholesome foods. Since most youngsters reach for the nearest tidbit, without any thought of nutritive value, its up to Mother to keep the and right foods on hand handy. Fruit, milk, juices, ice cream and pudding are favorites. First Go In Classroom Schedule Students all have their own opinions on which is better: to start school early and get out early or to start school late and get out of school late. But dont feel cheated. Utah State School Board has ruled that no matter when school starts, students everywhere in the state will receive 180 days of education. First to jump out of the pool and hit the books will be Jordan School District. Jordan will open its doors to students August 31 and will close them May 26. Salt Lake City. Murray City and Granite districts schools will open September 6 and close June 2. Christmas and Easter vacations will vary, but all Salt Lake County students can count on vacations for Utah Education Association Convention on October 6 and 7, Thanksgiving on November 24 and 25 and ' Washingtons Birthday on February 22. Murray, Granite and Salt Lake will observe Memorial Day, May 30. Murray and Jordan School have scheduled Districts Christmas vacation the afternoon of December 23 and will reconvene January 3. Salt Lake City School District will hold Christmas vacation all day December 23 and back to the books January 2. Granite School District wiU have the longest Christmas vacation of all with schools closing at the end of the day, December 22, and reconvening January 3. All school districts will observe an Easter recess. Granite and Jordan will close Mar. 24 only. Salt Lake wiH close March 23 and 24 and Murray will close March 24 and 27. School districts will observe Columbus Day, Wednesday, October 12; Veterans Day Friday, Birthday, Nov. 11; Friday, Lincolns February 10; and Arbor Day, Friday April 28, aU in the classroom. Teachers, of course, are always first on board and last to leave. Jordan School District wiU hold an administrators workshop Thursday, August 25 at 9 A.M. at HiUcrest High School, 7350 South 9th E. New teacher orientation wiU be August 26. 9:30 A.M. and opening institute wiU be August 29, 9:30 A.M. Teachers report to local schoolsAugust 30 and wiU begin classwork August 31. Teacher check out wiU be June 5. Salt Lake City and Granite school districts also wiUhold institute and faculty meetings September 1 and 2 with new teacher orientation August 29 and 31. Salt Lake City teachers wiU continue working until the Friday after June 2 and Granite teachers will prepare final reports June 3. Fall Is just as muck an indication of "new as spring ever was. Schools throughout the county will soon see the new tanned faces that the beginning of September brings, and the new shoes and new clothing of autumn . . . .and the beginning of school. Many students, too, will see something new when they reenter the sacred halls . . .New paint, new rooms, larger bookstores, bleachers, new principals, new teachers, new class offerings, new teaching methods and new textbooks. West High Panthers will find an enlarged and remodeled bookstore and a new rifle range. The whole main building has taken on a different hue. The blue walls are now a nicer blue and the ceilings ..... ' have gone from tan to cream. Nothing has been done to the old building built in 1889, Dr. Knight B. Kerr, principal, infornis curious Panthers. It will probably die a slow death. Granite High Farmers have felt the last splmter in the seat of their pants. Football bleachers have been refinished with aluminum. Arlington Elementary School will have a new annex. But even students at relatively new schools such as West Lake Junior High have new things to look forward to. New approaches to teaching will be used by teachers in various areas, particularly English and science. Many teachers have been busy ttys summer learning new techniques and students will have an opportunity to test '' them 1 1 l I all.
