Here, the Neighborhood Youth Corp6 Is headed by Dewey Moore, project director for Salt Lake County, and the success it hat enjoyed has already far surpassed all early expectations. In terms of the lives of boys and girls, there is no yardstick that could adequately measure the success of this program. The fringe benefits to society, while not the primary purpose, are equally great. The main goal of NYC Is to Increase the employability of youth. Many of those qual ifying for the corps are high so a secschool drop-out- s, ondary purpose is to encourage these young people to see the benefits of completing their education, therefore improving their chances in society. Of the total number, only about 60 girls. This is not due to Mr. Moore discrimination, said, but because the nature of most of the work is better suited to boys than slrls. No one knows better than this enthusiastic director how the completely successful program has been this summer. There Is deep emotion in his voice when he says, 'This Is one of the most enlightening summers I've ever spent. My entire understandIt ing of life has changed. does something to you when one of these boys looks earnestly In your eyes and says, 'You are the first one who has ever caredl " This program encompasses many young people who otherwise may not nave had the opportunity to learn alrade, such as the physically and mentally handicapped, those us with little education or training, and it places no discriminating bars against vre-vio- tt race background. This Is another of the fringe benefits that could most aptly be described in the words of one of the boys who said, "This is one of the best experiences Tvehad in my life. My supervisor has been great, and I've learned to work with other people." This boy, who was in a crew made up of boys of several nationalities, said, "I never had a chance before to really know other guys like this, but they are great!
