Nature Is Used by Woman When Making Decorations Nature provides LAYTON the basis of many beautiful craft and decorator items and some of the most unusual and lovely, as well as the most original, are now on display at the Layton Heritage Museum in Layton. Dora E. Woodward, a resident of Kaysville, is displaying part of , things. As the knowledge of Mrs. Woodwards pine needle weaving spread through her friends and family, she was often brought items that might be turned into a pine needle creation. ;her collection of handmade items made from pine needles. Mrs. Woodward has made more than 1,700 items from pine "needles, ranging from wall hangings and baskets to trays and - picture frames. She began her unusual hobby "in 1962 while traveling with her late husband in the Southwest. While camped at a campground - she saw a woman from Florida ; weaving the pine needles into a " pattern and asked her to teach her the craft. Because of lack of time, Mrs. Woodward was only taught the J most basic skills of using the needles, but her talent for y "design soon became apparent as She returned to her Kaysville home and began to make her own patterns. . Soon she had developed a very intricate pattern for some large gaskets she was doing. The style was similar to East Indian carving and lace work. She also makes baskets with an VAmerican Indian look, and a ;vide variety of other styles. A few months after completion "of some of her first projects she !was visited by her friend from who was amazed at the j Florida of patterns she had de-- 2 .variety veloped. When she saw them she '.couldnt get over it, said Mrs. Woodward. She just couldnt suming task of creating a functional or strictly decorative item from the needles. Even with speed that has come from years of experience, it still often takes over an hour to do one round on a basket or wall hanging. Each of the rows adds only the width of the pine needle to the size of the project so it often takes scores of hours to make a moderate size basket or believe what 1 had done. She kept saying that she hadnt taught me how to do those : LYNDIA GRAHAM Review Correspondent Wire rings, centers for her kets, and ideas all found their way to her home to be incorporated into a new creation. Friends from the Northwest would gather the longest pine needles and save them for Mrs. Woodward. Since they have passed away, she gathers the ' needles locally. The gathering is one of the most demanding, most tedious parts of her craft. After they have fallen from the trees, she gathers the long ones and sorts them, removing any that are not perfect. I wouldnt even bother with them if they arent over eight inches long, she said. Those over 10 inches are the best. She then puts them into bundles wrapped with a rubber band, with all of the sharp ends together. The bulb type end, where the needle was attached to the branch of the tree, is left on until weaving. Some projects are made leaving the rounded end on, which gives a nubby texture to the project, and some are made after the rounded end has been removed for a smooth, almost rattan look. Before she begins to weave the needles, Mrs. Woodward soaks them in water until they are pliable and easy to work with. Then she begins the time con bas- .! wall hanging. , f , ;; ;ine - , When the item is completed, a coat of varnish is added to add stability and durability. Mrs. Woodward has sold many of the creations she has made and does take special orders. She has made at least one for each of her children, 13 grandchildren, and 33 But her favorite are those for which she has received recognition in competitions and fairs. She has countless ribbons from both the county and state fairs and has won Best of Show and other special awards. She has kept all of the items that 'have been awarded a prize. So many of her items are original that it is hard to imagine that there could be many new patterns tucked away inside Mrs. Woodwards head, but as she begins a new project her tion goes to work and another beautiful project is begun.
