Dr. Cliff Sorensen, a ROY is eager to show dentist, Roy people how they can reduce dental bills and have a healthier mouth. To do this, he has transformed a small house next to the Roy Dental Building into the Utah Institute of Preventive Dentistry. Sorensen said preventive dentistry means working with patients before real damage has occurred. We dont do fillings or perform dental surgery. We teach people how to keep these problems from occurring. Sorensen said many people do not realize that over 95 percent of tooth decay and gum disease is preventable if proper techniques are used. As an example, he said there have recently been important advances in understanding how flouride decreases decay in adults and children. From 30 to ' 50 percent of decay can be prevented just by using flouride rinses, said Sorensen. Along with dispensing information about minimizing dental problems, Sorensen said he and employee Ann Downs, a registered dental hygenist, offer patients an individualized program of diagnosis, treatment and education. .By using diagnostic procedures, Downs claims he takes the guesswork out of dentistry. We can tell a patient exactly what the condition of his mouth is, added Sorensen. Two of the tests used are the decay activities indicator and the saliva test. The decay test measures a persons acid level, and indicator of susceptibility to decay, and the saliva test measures how well oral bacteria is controlled. We administer these tests on subsequent visits. By charting results, we can tell whether a patient is successfully controlling Following the diagnosis, as patient is taught how to treat his particular problems. Nine out of 10 people have either decay or gum trouble, said Downs. If a patient is in the preliminary stages of tooth decay, for example, the staff can show him how to stop the process and prevent a future filling. Videotapes and filmstrips are also used to reinforce learning. Sorensen said another advantage of the institute is the staffs up to date knowledge on dental research. We keep track of advances in preventive techniques. Right now there is a new toothpaste that has an enzyme to prevent plaque formation. He plans to send newsletters to families using the institute that describe current research.
