By SHELLEY KANCITIS Ravlaw Corratpondant Many observers of business trends in the United States believe the computer will have a significant impact on where people choose to work. Experts predict that instead of leaving home and driving to work, more people will use their homes as offices. Census figures from 1980 showed over 2 million people worked at home. Futurist Alvin Toffler predicts there will be 10 to 20 million workers by the end of the century. Data Scribe, a home-base- d business in Layton, exemplifies this trend. e After working for over 10 years, Sue Zen, owner of Data Scribe, moved from Colorado to Utah when her husband changed jobs. We arrived here in October, 1982. My husband Roger, said it was silly to start working fulltime right before the holidays so I decided to postpone job hunting for several months, said Zen. Zen discovered she enjoyed her freedom at home. Once I decided to start the business by offering secretarial services, we immediately bought a business computer with expanded memory capability, a letter quality printer and word processing software. Although Zen could offer secretarial services without having a computer, it streamlines her work and enables her to offer a wider variety of services to a larger number of clients. When Zen determined there was an adequate market for secretarial services, she expanded her advertising to include resume consultations. Clients come to my house with their job histories. I interview the person, compose a resume and type it. The computer allows Zen to store information using a minimum of space. She can also call up a resume on the computer, update it, and print out a revised copy in a matter of minutes. Since Zens husband is a computer engineer, he is an ideal consultant. Zen said other home businesses, such as cosmetic sales, could use computers to sort out clients by the type of product they use. The computer, for example, could be programmed to list names of all clients who prefer a specific perfume. Aside from her excitement about the many possibilities offered by the computer, Zen is also pleased about having her office at home.
