Others are there just to learn how to defend themselves. The training occurs in the small carport gymnasium which Andreason had walls constructred for and closed off in January. Its not a huge, fancy recreation center, but adequate for these kids. And other than a $12 fee (which goes to the American Boxing Federation), these kids train for free as do most amateur boxers. Costs such as uniforms and equip- ment are paid for through exhibition " bouts. KEVIN ANDREASON works with weights to About 40 kids form the Bountiful get strength, not bulk. Area Boxing Club. He was a former amateur boxer and has coached boxing for five years with the Police Athletic League. He has taken classes from several coaches and attends a boxing clinic each year which brings together some of the best coaches from all over the world. As a hobby, he coaches three professional boxers. What coerced him to turn his carport into a boxing gymnasium? Andreason smiles and blames his LDS bishop. The bishop thought it could help to reform some kids who were getting into trouble, Andreason recalls. But most of the kids in Andreasons club arent problem kids, Andreason said. Its amazing how a person changes once he gets his self confidence. Most of these kids who get into trouble dont have much self confidence, and once they get it, its amazing how their personality changes. Andreason recalls how Kevin used to get into a lot of fights. I figured the best way to stop him from fighting was to teach him how to do it right so that hed have nothing to prove. Andreason said its surprising that once kids know how to fight properly, they usually stop fighting at school. To join the Bountiful Area Boxing Club, kids must be at least 10 years of age. Andreason said that studies have shown its not good to start them before then. Many parents are nervous about their children taking up boxing. Box-- . ing can be a dangerous sport, admits. But there are tight controls for youth that offer protection; Andreason said that if a kid is hit hard, the referee will stop the match im , 28-ye- ar . five-tim- mediately for a mandatory eight count. Most injuries are bloody noses, Andreason said, which sometimes causes problems for some of the parents who worry about injuries. Some parents, though, come with their kids to help them train, Andreason said. Andreason is strict when it comes to conditioning. He said boxers need to be in the best of condition of any sport because boxing is a demanding sport. He uses a programmed weight training course for strength building instead of bulk. But he wont start kids on the weight training program until they are 15 or 16, Before that age stunts their growth, he claims. Andreason is a former owner of the International and American Beauty Colleges until he sold out two years ago and I havent worked a day since. But when you get down to it, if this wasnt a lot of fun, itd be a lot of work, he laughs. He has set strict rules for the kids who train at his home. They must keep their grades up, If the grades drop, then Andreason said he wont let them box until the grades come back up. Under American Boxing Federation guidelines, its illegal to make a profit from amateur boxing, Andreason said. So everything he makes goes into equipment. Its also used to send the kids to boxing shows. He has taken some of the kids as far east as Colum' bus, Ohio for boxing shows. coach!
