Knight, one of the most famous and successful coaches in the country, meets the young high school coach at a Utah basketball camp during the summer. A friendship develops to the point where just the two of them go on fishing trips together. A few years later, after marked success as a prep coach, Knight hires Smith as one of his assistants at Indiana. A native of Logan, Smith enjoyed a highly successful year as coach of the Bear River Bears when the opportunity came to coach nearer his home town, Sky View High School in Smithfield. Just two weeks into this job Smith received a phone call from Knight asking him to become one of his assistants at Indiana in Bloomington. Now, according to Smith, when Bobby full-tim- assistant, works with Indianas Smith specifically forwards and is in charge of scouting upcoming opponents of thelloosiers. The last time Smith played basketball in the Carbon area was in the Helper Invitational meet at the Helper Junior High in 1980, the year before he left for Indiana. As a member of the Watts Lumber team from Pleasant Grove, Smith won the Woodys Jewelry watch as the outstanding player of that tournament. Although hes only 31, Smith admits he has high aspirations of joining the ranks of assistants. The reason: no fewer than 16 former Knight assistants have moved into head ht coaching positions during the head mentors tenure at Indiana University.
