Show UASun Advocate, Price, Utah Wednesday, March 28, 1984 Carbon County School District School Calendar Durrant speller takes title School officials said it is unusual to have both the winner and runner-u- p from the same school. It is also unusual to have a fifth and sixth grader remain in the contest after the seventh and eighth graders have been eliminated. There were 29 contestants from the fourth through eighth grades. By ARVA SMITH Staff writer Digression usually means to ramble or to wander from the main objective but for Mary Ann Siggard, a sixth grader at Durrant Elementary School, it meant a straight path to winning the annual Carbon County School District Spelling Bee last week. James Lee Jensen, elementary supervisor for the district, said that a list of c words citation, chairwoman, censorship, carnage and calamine -- - eliminated several of the contestants in the later rounds. contestants only remaining, Erin Warnick, a fifth grader at Durrant, missed two With a word. Mary Ann spelled it correctly then correctly spelled the next word, which was digression, to clinch the title. Mary Ann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Derral L. Siggard was named winner. Erin, daughter Mary Ann Siggard of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Winning the contest does not mean the end of study for Mary Ann. She has been given a book W. Warnick, was named runner up. 1984-198- of 3,000 words to study. The book is distributed by the contest sponsors, the Deseret News. I am studying about one hour a day for the state contest which will be April 13 in the Clayton Intermediate School in Salt Lake City, she says. Mary Ann is learning a lot of new words, her mother, Janis, says. She can usually sound out the words she knows but many of the words in the book are unfamiliar to her and to us. We have not been able to find some of them in our large dictionary. They are hard to spell, her mother said. For contestants lucky enough to survive the state contests, there is a national contest held the first week in June. Kindergarten registration dates set Dates have been set for kindergarten registration for the 1984-8- 5 school year.
