Its been 17 years since anyone has seen Carbon win a homecoming; lets suck it up and see if we can change that. I was trying not to be too excited. We wanted this so much; we worked so hard. The losing streak had to end. I could taste it; we all could taste it. On the outside the losing reputation projected, but on the inside we were clinging desperately to that slight chance. We were still alive and unlike past Dino teams, we hadnt quit! Listen up, divide left 51 shotgun.. .51 on one on one, ready... Before we broke from the huddle nobody dared say a thing for a split second. burst-post-burs- t, t, Thoughts of the field-govanished, it was touchdown or al nothing. Set! I had to get rid of the ball and time hope for another play ut , the line and inI the ball with threw stinctively all my might on the dead run. Darin caught the ball behind the defense and rambled to the end zone. One official signaled touchdown. Another one signaled that time was out. The crowd went berzerk! Was it a dream? Fans poured onto the 10-ya- rd By TONY GIANOULIS burst-post-burs- the field and remembered the thousands of hours spent together preparing for a game like this. Thinking, I tried to run out of bounds; it was too far away! The rush was charging and I spotted a hole so I scrambled up into the pocket and away from the rush. I knew Id crossed the 50-ya- rd field. Springville was stunned. I looked around and couldnt believe what I saw there was a yellow penalty flag. My heart stopped. I prayed it wasnt us. Oh God! it couldnt happen again. I knew that I crossed the line; I hoped nobody would notice. In the middle of the celebration the touchdown, our dream was called back. A large emptiness engulfed me, leaving me numb. Standing there all alone, I saw my fantasy dissolve before my eyes. Officials attempted to regain some control. They consulted with each other trying to explain the circumstances. Some of the fans on top of the stadium left to avoid the rush at the gate, knowing they had seen the best football game in nearly two decades. But we still lost! ! After their conference the officials marked off five yards against us and reset the clock at 00:01 seconds left to tick. Springville argued; Carbon argued; it was all in vain. I saw the Springville side elated while the Carbon side was dejected. It didnt seem a fitting end to all that went in. I stared up at my teammates on a. vice-vers- My heart hit the ground!
