Show Sun Advocate, Wednesday, September 28, 1983 Price, Utah5A Are schools ignoring humanities? In determining that American high schools are in dire need of upgrading, Foundation the Carnegie for the Ad- vancement of Teaching has duplicated much of the work of other organizations, including the national Commission on Excellence in Education. Nevertheless, the Carnegie Foundation report is especially noteworthy. In this age of high technology, mathematics and science often are stressed at the expense of the humanities. The Carnegie Foundation, however, has recommended that mastery of the English language, including writing, become the central objective of high school curriculums. Although the Carnegie report acknowledges that enhancing math and science instruction will serve the national interest, it recognizes that the highest purpose of education is to enrich poem by Emily Dickinson will not aid the United States to compete with Japan in the our lives. By the same token, however, achieving expertise in calculus and physics will not provide the insights into human nature that How can the young people of this era appreciate the rich legacy of our literature when too many teachers allow them to read the classics in abridged versions that dismally fail to capture the genius and magic of the original language? How can young people learn to write effectively, or think clearly, when multiple-choic-e quizzes replace examinations that require answers to be written in the form of essays? Obviously, the study of a play by William Shakespeare, a novel by Charles Dickens or a high-technolo- gy sweepstakes. may be found in great literature. Moreover, English now is the international language of diplomacy, business and science. No matter how mathematically gifted, a , student cannot become successful without skills to communicate with others. Any remaining doubts that quality education has become the exception, rather than the rule, should be dispelled by the fact that less than 3 percent of high school graduates last year met the academic standards prescribed by the national commission on education excellence. The standards include at least four years of English, three years of mathematics, science and social studies, and half a year of computer science. Since the national commissions report was released in April, renewed interest in improving our schools has offered hope for achieving an education renaissance in the United States.
