Drawn by the hand of curiosity, we find ourselves on a vacation driving through the towns where we grew up, pointing out to our children or companions the places where we spent our early years. But as the journey continues, we find more and more of those places and the people in them our changed, altered by the graces of time. where we grew perceptions sweetening The houses up surely werent that small. The trees we every weekend were much taller than those that seem to have taken their places, and how could they have the audacity to build a Safeway supermarket in the same field where you and your buddies labored one summer to build that secret underground fort. At that moment we realize those strange and wonderful first experiences are gone forever. You cant get them back and no matter where you search youll never find memories as vivid, as exciting or as bittersweet as those first climbed memories. Unfortunately, and with much regret, this is how I feel now that I have seen Return of the Jedi, the third installment of the Star Wars saga. Thousands line up for 'Jedi' showings Associated Press Return of the Jedi blasted off Wednesday across the nation with a nearly unprecedented number of theater showings, and predictions for the best start of the three Star Wars blockbusters. Thousands of fans of Luke Skywalker and the trilogys cast of heroes lined up for hours and camped in front of box offices coast to coast. They came despite higher ticket prices nearly everywhere, such as the $6 price at a theater in Tucson, Ariz., but many fans didnt care. Ive been waiting for this thing for three years. Halfway through the film I realized I was still sitting there waiting, anticipating the magic. For some reason things just didnt seem to work as well has they had before. Maybe it was just me. Maybe Ive grown a little more jaded since I first saw Luke go with the Emperial Storm Troopers, but the special effects just dont seem as special. The grand battles just dont seem so grand, and the heroic dialogue just wasnt quite so heroic. Even some of the characters we all know and love seemed a little frayed around the edges. I still love the film. Return of the Jedi is much more fun than a barrel of Wookies, and Im sure Ill see it again and again, but when the final blaster had blasted and the last battle had been battled and the heroes had performed all their heroics, there was a feeling of sad realization among the audience, as if we had all just been told that our old childhood homes had been turned into health food stores. The shell was still intact, but the insides, the heart of the spirit, was forever altered.
