Catholics to open services facility new branch office of Catholic Community Services of Utah will open Wednesday, June 1, to provide various counseling services for residents of Carbon and Emery counties. A Catholic Community Services, formerly known as Catholic Charities, is the official social services arm of the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City. The branch office will be located at 202 E. 200 North in Price. According to the Rev. Robert Servatius, pastor of Notre Dame deLourdes Catholic Church, the state diocese has wanted to open a branch office in this area for some time. It has long been a dream of the diocese to have a branch office in Carbon County, he said. The opening of the new office is a direct result of months of efforts on the part of the diocese and the local Catholic church of Carbon County to provide this outreach. Servatius said the initial thrust of the office will be to provide confidential aid to people in the areas of individual counseling, marriage counseling, family counseling, adoption and procedures problem pregnancies. The branch office will be staffed by Maria Parrilla, who comes to Carbon County after a year of employment with the Clearfield Job Corps. Ms. Parrilla received her bachelors degree in psychology and Spanish from Weber State College in Ogden, and her Methodists form handbell choir Community United Methodist has Church welcomed the arrival of a set of 25 handbells to masters degree in psychology from St. Francis College in Fort Wayne, Ind. Ms. Parrilla has extensive experience in counseling with incarcerated women, abused pre-clinic- al be used as an addition to the musical portion of worship services. The Rev. O. Gregory Smith, pastor, said the handbells will be women and children, and patients at the Fort Wayne Mental Health Center. She has also been involved in marriage and family counseling services. Prior to her employment at the Clearfield Job Corps, she served as a pastoral minister and counselor at Our Lady of played by six or eight musicians who will be trained by Choir Director Myrna Bauermeister and accompanist Darla Eaquinta. Smith said the choir will perform at special programs as well as during regular worship services. Beginning in September, she will also spend a half day a week at Notre Dame School. In addition to her staff position with Catholic Community Services, Ms. Parrilla will serve as youth minister for Notre Dame Parish. For counseling services, there will be a sliding fee scale, based on the ability of clients to pay for the services. Although Catholic Community Services is sponsored and operated by the Catholic Church, the services are open to all persons regardless of race, ethnic background or religious preference. Organized in January, the food bank has come to the rescue of many unemployed coal miners in the area. The Rev. Donald Hope, pastor of the parish, said an average of 120 families show up every other Monday for the free food supplies. Beginning next month, Hope said the food bank will be opened only once a month instead of every other week. However, families will be allotted twice as many supplies, he said.
