Show 2B Sun Advocate, Price, Utah Wednesday, March 30, 1983 34th annual tournament Veltri Drug wins hoop invitational ByWALTBORLA Sports Writer HELPER Veltri Drug defeated Belnap Insurance of to Ogden Saturday night, become the only undefeated team In the three day round robin and thereby win the championship of the 34th annual Helper Invitational Basketball Tournament. The Veltri crew, runnerups to Food Center in the recently completed local recreational league, added three College of Eastern Utah cagers to its lineup for the meet. One of them, Ted Guinn, the Eagles . guard, paced Veltris to the title and was selected as the outstanding player of the tournament. He was presented with a wrist watch by Woodys Jewelry of - 89-6- 3, Helper. Utah Power & Light claimed second place in the meet by ripping Food Center Saturday Food Center made night, to its roster for addition one only the tournament, University of Utah student Sam Milovich, and consequently lost all three games it played in the meet. UP&L upset the highly touted Belnap Insurance team Friday on the way to the night, second place finish. Veltri Drug had three very close games in the meet, starting off Thursday night with win over d a UP&L. It appeared that the Helper team would run away with the game after the first quarter of play, running up a 4 lead. UP&L managed to tie the score at 4343 during the halftime intermission, the arrival of pivot man Larry Newby from Salt Lake City in time for second 94-7- 3. 89-8-8, 91-8- hard-earne- 6 26-1- quarter play giving the Kilowatt team the boost it needed. Double digit scoring by Dino Kiahtipes, Newby, Pete Cowley, Mark Martinez and Angelo Kiahtipes was not quite enough, however, to overcome a performance by Guinn, 20 by Craig Ensign, 13 by Ron Stubbs and 11 each by Vic Chapman and Dwayne Holsten. Food Center pressed Veltri Drug throughout the Friday night match before the eventual champions finally opened up a margin in the final two minutes of play. Stubbs, Guinn and Ensign combined for the scoring power Veltri had this night and Mike OShea joined Ensign in sweeping the rebounds off the back boards. Stubbs won game scoring honors with 28 points, Guinn finished with 24 and 23-poi- nt six-poi- nt Ensign 22. Moynier had another good night for Food Center, totaling 20 points and joining teammate Frank Peczuh in the battle for the rebounds against Ensign, Guinn and OShea. Peczuh netted 16 points for his best performance of the year. Scott Nielsen and Hyde each had 12 points for Food Center in what was a much more closely contested game then the final score indicates. Joining Guinn on the team were Rupp and McKinney of Belnap Insurance; Ensign, Stubbs and OShea of Veltri Drug; Newby, Dino and Angelo Kiahtipes of UP&L; Hyde and Peczuh of Food Center. Guinn joins an impressive list of past winners of the Woody Jewelry wrist watch as the most valuable player in the long history of the tournament. Photo by Stovo Holnor Lady Eagles meet CNCC Friday in opener The College of Eastern Utah lady Eagles are keeping their fingers crossed that the weather will hold up for the season of womens fastpitch softball. The women open up the season Friday at 1 p.m. against Colorado Northwestern Community College at the Northeast Baseball Complex in Price. April is a tough month for CEU as the women are scheduled to play 20 games in the period and all but four of the games are conference match ups. It will be a hectic month, said coach Lori Woodland.
