Rasmussen Social Science Amy Rendon Business Math Chad Hobby Science Outstanding seniors East Carbon picks Sterling Scholars SUNNYSIDE East Carbon High School has named five outstanding seniors to compete in the Sterling Scholars of Southeastern Utah, according to principal Gregg P. Wakefield. The nominees are Kaye F. Harris, general scholar, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William R. Harris; Robert D. Nielsen, social science, son of JuDee Nielsen; Richard N. Rasmussen, math, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elwin Rasmussen; Amy Rendon, business, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis T. Rendon and Chad Hobby, science, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Heath. These seniors will be judged on the basis of scholarship, leadership, citizenship and a personal interview. A winner and runner-u- p will be selected out of the 12 different categories at the Sterling Scholars banquet at Green River High School April 5. The 12 categories are English, speech and drama, mathematics, science, social science, music, visual arts, vocational education, business, homemaking, foreign language and general scholarship. Schools may enter students in as many of the 12 categories as they would like. It is not a requirement that each school have a student entered in each category. Winners will receive $250 and runners-u- p will be presented with $100. Several colleges and universities are also offering full or part tuition scholarships to the winners and runners-up- . Local businesses and organizations that have contributed to the financial obligation for East Carbon High School to enter the competition are Kaiser Steel Corp., Miners Trading Post, East Carbon City, Zions First National Bank, Rotary Club, Angs Sunny Bowl, ECHS Booster Club and Cultura. Other schools participating in the Sterling Scholar program are Carbon High School, Emery County High School, Green River High School, Grand County High School, Monticello High School, San Juan High School and Whitehorse High School. Each student nominee must complete a detailed portfolio outlining his or her academic, extracurricular and civic achievements. foreign language and general scholarship. The Sterling Scholars of Southeastern Utah will hold its third annual competition on Tuesday, April 5, with scholars from eight high schools competing in 12 areas. Participating high are Carbon High Emery County High East Carbon High schools School, School, School, Green River High School, Grand County High School, Monticello High School, San Juan High School and Whitehorse High School. The 12 areas open for competition include English, and speech drama, mathematics, science, social science, music, visual arts, vocational business, education, homemaking, ' academic, extracurricular and civic achievements, concentrating heavily in the area of nomination. That evening at an awards program, the winners and runners-u- p will be announced. The public is invited to attend the program which begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Green River High School auditorium. Each winner will receive $250 cash, while each runner-u- p will receive $100 cash. In addition, most colleges, universities and vocational will schools award to and winners scholarships runners-u- in all or some p categories. Computer age hits Carbon By JODIE DERVOE Carbon High Correspondent Students have definitely hit the computer age at Carbon High School as six students have been accepted to participate in the 1983 summer session of the Advanced High School Studies program in computer science at Brigham Young University. These six students are Monica Leonard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Leonard; James Jensen, son of Ward Jensen; Brett Gardiner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Errol Gardiner; Brad Palmer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Palmer; Troy Torger-soson of Mr. and Mrs. Robert n, and Torgerson; Tracy Stamatakis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Stamatakis. The class consists of an ink class in tensive computer programming. Upon successful completion of the course, and if any of the six two-wee- students decide to enroll in they may receive two college credit hours normally awarded for completion of BYU, Computer Science 142. The class will cover in two weeks what is normally covered in a full semester at BYU. It will feature classroom work as well as laboratory training. In addition to being accepted into the computer program, these students have been named as recipients of an Advanced High School Studies program academic scholarship which covers the full cost of tuition and computer usage. At the end of the course, participants will be honored at a graduation ceremony where they will receive certificates of completion. Chamber sets meet The Carbon County Chamber will sponsor a planning meeting for the 1983 of Commerce International Days celebration at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, in the Mountain Fuel Supply Co. auditorium.
