The Vikings made it to the championship 47--game by in the defeating Kanab third round of the tournament Friday at the Brigham Young University Marriott Center. 42 Things were looking good for the Vikings going into the final game against Beaver. But the four-da- y tournament ordeal seemed to take its toll as Beaver held East Carbon We took second place but it should have been first, said coach Steve Jurca. We were very burned out at the end. It was tough getting there (to the 38-5-6. finals) and by the time we got there we were very tense. The guys were very disappointed after it was all over because they knew they could beat them. Despite the disappointing loss to Beaver, the Vikings still stand high holding on to the No. 2 spot in the state. This is quite an accomplishment for a team that hasnt been to a state playoff in three years and who hasnt won any state playoff game in seven years. It was great we went as far as we did but we should have said senior gone farther, player Robbie Nielsen. But the pressure got to us. Im not satisfied with second place. It would have been better if we had won. But the championship game was one of frustration for the Vikings. The game started off with a bang for Beaver and before the Vikings knew it they were behind by nine points. East Carbon never recovered that lead but played fairly even with Beaver throughout the rest of the game. Yet the Vikings refused to give up and Nielsen helped pull East Carbon to within 3 in the third quarter. But Beaver came back with two buckets and a free throw to regain a comfortable margin. The Vikings still had a few chances to take the game but they lost partially at the line hitting six of 15 free throws. East Carbon won the Kanab game at the line Friday, knocking in 15 of 18 charity shots in the fourth quarter. One big problem the Vikings faced was losing Larry Sanchez early in the first quarter. Sanchez was nailed in the mouth k while going up on a layup. That really shook him up, 28-3- 10-po- fast-brea- Jurca said. Sanchez was forced to sit on the bench until midway through the second quarter. With upper lip in pain throughout most of the game, Sanchez only managed to hit the board for 2 points. The Beavers also managed to hold East Carbon from the Vikings usual inside game. Jurca said his team is unsure of itself when it comes to shooting from the outside. This measure by the Beavers held Nielsen to just 14 points. Rudy Sanchez contributed 10 points for East Carbon. With the championship now another chapter in high school history, Jurca finished his second season as head coach of the Vikings. He managed to bring the young, inexperienced team to the Region 13 cham- pionship along with the of taking recognition place in the state. second Sanchez got hit in the face on a layup early in the first period. Matt Dryman led off the Eagles half of the last inning with a double and Chris Colohan and Doug Voss each drew a base on balls to load the sacks. SUSC is perennially one of the small college diamond powers in the Rocky Mountain Conference and it gives us a great deal of satisfaction to beat a four-yeschool in our first outing.
