For a town to survive in these times of federal, state and county funding cutbacks, greater reliance must be placed on the services of the volunteer. In order for me to be a viable member of a community, it is imperative that I contribute to that community and not just partake of its services. Doing volunteer work requires a commitment to a community and until I give of my time to community projects, I never feel that total commitment. However, in addition to this sense of duty which I feel, I reap many personal rewards for my time. Getting immersed in volunteer work yields: Numerous friendships with people who share like interests. A part in the decision-makin- g process which can have effects on the community. An opportunity to work with and for the youth of the area. For, indeed, they will be the future generation of volunteers. and fulfillment.
