Show fe Sun Advocate Iba SB Wednesday, May 5, 19B2 Lab chief uses job skills for art hobby By KRISTEN D. TAYLOR Staff Writer David Zwahlen is one of a growing number of highly skilled health care professionals who has chosen to live and work in the Carbon County area. Zwahlen is the administrative director of the clinical one-ye- I at Castleview laboratory Hospital. To qualify for his present position, Zwahlen completed his B.S. degree in microbiology at Brigham Young University. He then served a internship in clinical pathology and completed two years of hospital experience before applying for a graduate program. After two additional years of study, he was awarded a masters degree in medical technology. Although Zwahlen has been offered similar positions in other states like California and Hawaii, he has chosen the Castleview Hospital for his work. It is really exciting to see and be a part of the growth and change at the clinical laboratory here in this hospital," he said. The lab includes a highly trained staff of 17 people. The majority of the technical staff is nationally registered with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Most important, we can now offer tests and services that were not available here two years ago, Zwahlen said. One reason is that we have new, highly specialized equipment. This is important because now physicians and patients can have test results within a matter of hours instead of days and this ultimately improves the quality of health care. All in all, we offer over 100 tests and services. Several examples of test results that can be completed in a number of hours vs. a former number of days include a serum pregnancy test which can confirm a tubal pregnancy, a thyroid profile, a digoxin test which can measure a cardiac medication often critical to heart patients, a theophylline levels necessary for patients with certain lung problems. Our laboratory costs are comparable to the costs of other medical laboratories within the state of Utah, Zwahlen said. However, the concept of cost is a difficult one to understand. He said Americans demand the best health care available. Just having the equipment neccessary to maintain good quality health care is expensive. In our lab, we have invested approximately $200,000 in new equipment, he said. For example, we have I,asar Cell Counter which cost $65,000 and requires $8,200. yearly for maintenance. This piece of equipment enables us to do a complete blood mi. ar David Zwahlen examines his ''critter'' with sons David and collection Johnathan. Zwahlens enthusiasm for his field of study doesn't end at the office, either. He uses the knowledge obtained in his classes like entomology or the study of insects in his hobbies, too. In fact, his boxes and boxes of specimens qualify him as an amateur entomologist. He bird moths, has specimens of monkeyhead moths, Sphinx moths, bark moths and peach moths. He has dozens of butterflies and even more just plain critters. His most exotic specimen is probably a Lr is. v & Madagascar cockroach saved from an ad- vanced physiology class. He shares his hobby with his family his wife, Marva and their three sons. However, his wife admits that occasionally things get a little out of hand like the time one of the boys brought home a very long snake for Dads collection. Zwahlen then uses the specimens (like butterflies) in flower arrangements that he designs himself. He even dries his own, handpicked flowers. Recently, he was asked to demonstrate his flower arranging skills at a s LDS Relief Society conference. new In his spare time, he ties flies, reloads shells and designs quilts a skill he learned from his grandmother. All in all, Zwahlen displays an insatiable zest for all the things in his life. Well," he muses, Marva likes all the crazy stuff I do.
