Show Sun Advocate, Price, Utah 1982 Wednesday, May 5, 11 A Competition will be tough for summer jobs in Utah - SALT LAKE CITY ( AP) Students looking for summer employment In Utah will find fewer jobs available and more competition for them this year, government and school officials say. Typically, we experience in May and June an influx of some 20,000-plu- s students into the labor market," said Utah Job Service economist Ray Sargent. Half to of those have usually been successful. It appears it may be more difficult this year to find employment because the states unemployment rate is higher. Half of the 45,000 people who are out of work in Utah are in the age group with which students would be competing for jobs, Sargent said. And the job growth is much slower. Relatively, the number of jobs available will probably be lower. which The construction industry, is a in serious hires students, traditionally slump in the state, he said. We are having an extremely large number of applicants for parks and recreation jobs, said Frank Fraser, government compliance manager for Salt Lake City. The city had 150 jobs available this summer, down from previous years because of budget restraints, he said. Some 400 people have applied for those positions and more of than in the past. those have been They are still coming in quite heavily, Fraser said. Its a little too early to know for sure, but Im not terribly optimistic, said Karen Macfarlane, the placement director for LDS Business College in Salt Lake City. Everybody seems to be making do with the staff they have. Weve had only half as many calls for summer jobs for vacation replacements as last year, she said. Many students usually work for the government cleaning and maintaining parks or as vacation relief in government offices, she said. There are fewer of those government-typ- e jobs. People are having to move down into fast foods, she said. Were still finding jobs, three-fourt- but there certainly are many more applicants than a few years ago, even last year. I think they can and will still get something, she said. "I dont think its that critical, but theyre not begging for them to come, like they have in past years." The University of Utah placement office has not had much change from last year in the number of summer jobs that are available, but it still is early to tell, said U of U placement official Sam Morrison. Most of the jobs that now are available to students for the summer are ones at camps and resorts, he said. For high school students, the job situation is especially critical, said Marie Barker, a secretary in Highland High Schools career development center in Salt Lake City. There are a lot fewer this year, she said. Until the first of March, we didnt have any. Thats very unusual. hs Cowboys Exclusive non-studen- ts Auxiliary ready for Poppy Day Members American the Legion of Auxiliary Post No. 21 will conduct their annual Poppy Day May 14.
