Show 9 Tuesday October 31 , 1 ! Sun Advocate, Price, Utah 5B 989 an ear to the door Grasshoppers were a prehistoric feast By LAYNE Staff writer MILLER I recently read an article by David B. Madsen, Utah state archaeologist, about the eating habits of the prehistoric residents of Lakeside Cave, located on the western edge of the Great Salt Lake. It seems they made use of naturally salted grasshoppers. The revelation came in 1984 when Madsen and several other archaeologists were digging in the cave to gather information on the lifestyle of the people using the cave over a 5,000-yea- r period. What discovered were tons of they grasshopper parts. Every layer they uncovered was permeated with grasshoppers they estimated as many as five million prehistoric hoppers were found. The discovery remained a mystery until some two dozen samples of dried human feces were discovered, and they too contained grasshopper parts and sand, the two most prominent components in the cave. The discovery told the archaeologist Indians were eating the hoppers, and that somehow the sand was involved in the process. The following year, Madsen had a group of excited, amateur archaeologists visit his office to report they had found millions of grasshoppers lying along the eastern margin of the lake. When he went to investigate, he found huge numbers of insects that had been blown into the salty water of the lake and then washed up on the shore. With the drying effect of the sun and the wave action, Madsen discovered miles of windrows consisting of dried and salted grasshoppers. The rows contained as many as 500 to 10,000 grasshoppers per foot. The rows, well sorted by the waves, contained nothing but grasshoppers coated with a thin coating of sand. As I have read the literature of prehistoric cultures, I have envisioned them collecting insects and seeds in a backbreaking, tedious method using baskets and seed beaters. The people here gathered them by the handfuls already dried and salted for them. The sand in the dung was the residue of sand clinging to the hoppers that were consumed. The sand layers and grasshopper fragments found in the cave were the result ofthe people winnowing the grasshoppers to remove the sand. When the mystery was seeds and ground into meal and eaten as mush or cakes. Another method included roasting them directly in the found. lie discovered that grasshoppers were indeed a favorite item on the menu of pits they were driven into. When roasted that way, they were considered a delicacy. Nutritionally, the hoppers were a real find. They weigh in at about 60 percent protein, 11 percent carbohydrate and 2 percent fat (very low in cholesterol). Madsen then calculated the rate of return of insect collection, how many calories many Native American groups using the Utah area. These included the Ute and Southern Paiute. Numerous instances have been noted where grasshoppers and crickets form a substantial part of their diets. Soon after they mature and before they are capable of flying, or later in the fall when the cool weather slows their activity, great quantities were collected by sweeping them up with brushes and brooms, or they were driven into pits by beating the ground with Staff writer This is for all the men out there trying to decide what to get their women friends for make it tools. There was a list of tools needed. It said nothing about a rusty pair of pliers, a crescent wrench or a screwdriver, which was all I had. Well, to make a long story short, it took us, me and the kids, two hours to get the things working. After getting the slats off, I had to hook up the electrical connections on the dryer, hoses on the washer and manipulate those appliances into 57 inches of require tools. So come on guys, get real, women use tools too! Just for an example, yesterday I had a washer and dryer delivered to my house. I hadnt thought about them being in crates until I got home from work. My son had spent the afternoon cutting the cardboard off, but there were still wooden slats on the bottoms. When we finally managed to get the dryer turned on its back I realized the feet parts were bigger around than my pliers would reach. I sent the kids hunting for a crescent wrench but was disappointed to, find it didnt expand big enough for the job needed it. Compare this if you will, to the calorie content of some of todays modern food. A chili dog is 269 calories, a slice of Pizza Hut pizza is 480 calories, a McDonalds Big Mac is 541 calories.
