Show I Tuesday, October 31, 1989 Sun Advocate, Price, Utah 3A Federal agencies plan coordinated management effort The steadily rising number of recreation visitors to south- east Utah has highlighted the Mountains, and Natural Bridges National Monument, need for interagency cooperation among the three federal agencies providing recreational services. In a joint release, Bureau of Land Management Moab District Manager Gene Forest Nodine, Manti-LaSSupervisor George Morris, and Southeast Utah Group National Park Service Superintendent Harvey Wickware, have announced that the Bureau of Land Management Connecting branches of these trails could provide routes to Arches National Park, the LaSal Mountains and al (BLM), Forest Service (USFS), and National Park Service (NPS) are working to coordinate the development of recreation facilities. The combined effort would enhance the efforts already underway by each agency, provide additional recreation opportunities for visitors and seek out strategies for min- imizing Kokopellis Trail. The trails would generally follow existing roads and jeep trails. Other potential projects include development of hiking, mountain bike and jeep trail systems in the BLM Canyon Rims Recreation Area and the San Rafael Swell, and construction of interpretive exhibits along Interstate-7- 0 and the LaSal Mountain Loop Road. Additional information about potential projects will be described in a series of forth- environmental impacts. The support of private companies, businesses and other organizations will be essential to achieve the objectives of the initiative. As a first step, the three agencies, in cooperation with the Utah Division of State Parks and Recreation, are working toward establishing a joint visitor center in Moab so that visitors to the area can gain information from all the agencies from one location, rather than having to travel to or call several different offices. The agencies are currently evaluating alternatives for establishing the visitor center. The Forest Service has received a $25,000 Challenge Grant to start this project. The BLM, USFS and NPS are also starting preliminary planning for a trail system that would connect the major areas of southeast Utah. The U-12- coming media ements. One trail being considered would link the Great Western Trail and Moab via Castle Dale, the San Rafael Swell and the city of Green River.
