Show w Tuesday, October 31, 1989 Sun Advo cys, Ppcp, 'Avi speed camera will help make mining safer High A sophisticated camera that can record rock blasting at the rate of up to two million frames per second is helping University of Utah mining engineers seek safer and more efficient ways to excavate ores and minerals in underground and open-pi- t mining. Dr. Michael K. McCarter, professor and chairman of the department of mining engineering, says the camera records traces of fractures and fragmentation processes in a special blast chamber in the College of Mines and Earth Sciences fragmentation laboratory. We hope to gain insights into how best to use explosives under field conditions, especially in breaking material apart for mining, says Book on arthritis is now available A new resource is now available from the Arthritis Foundation to help the estimated 37 million Americans with arthritis 240,000 in the Utah area alone make their everyday tasks easier, despite the pain and limitation arthritis may cause. e The Guide to Independent Living for People with Arthritis offers practical tips for joint protection and energy conservation in each of 23 different aspects of daily life. It addresses everything from basic activities such as walking, bathing, dressing and eating, to more complex tasks such as cooking, travel and recreational activities. The cost of the guide is only $5. To order a copy of the Guide to Independent Living, send a check or money order payable to the Arthritis Foundation, Utah Chapter at 1733 So. 1100 E Salt Lake ' City, Utah 84105. ' 415-pag- nationally known explosives firm. By studying fundamental processes under controlled conditions, the U researchers hope to find ways to improve the performance of explosives. Rock fragmentation is used in hard rock mining like copper and gold and in excavating industrial minerals, like phosphate, and at rock quarries. Donated to the mines school by Hercules Inc., the blast containment chamber is known technically as a Trident C4 first-stag- e chamber, which Lockheed Aircraft and the Navy developed for the defense industry. For the mining engineers, the current photographic system is a substantial improvement over the departments 1989-199- 25. Pursuant to the agree- ment, the county will pay an annual premium $75,134 for liability coverage. The premium includes a rate adjustment which constitutes a 21 percent increase over last years costs on the coverage. Acting on an urelated agenda item, the commissioners approved a service agreement with Utah Power & Light Company on the installation of a new electrical line at the Christmas parade will be held November 25 The annual Christmas Parade in downtown Price will be held at noon on Nov. 25. The Carbon High School marching band will lead the parade. The event will be highlighted by the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. Contact parade chairman to be 6 Gale Cox at included in the parade. A special request is being issued for singing groups. Santa will have treats for all the kids following the parade. The parade will start at 200 East and proceed down Main Street to 100 West. The parade is being sponsored by the Price Downtown Association. Association officials are requesting all Price business people join together to make a successful event. The initial county cost to the county will be $9,480. The county will also be assessed a minimum monthly service fee of $102.70 after the line has been completed. Addressing a request from Luke Pappas to purchase eight parcels (1.76 total acreage) of county-owne- d property in the Spring Canyon area, the commission voted to attempt to negotiate a land-swa- p rather than advertise the property for sale. The parcels are located near the now nonexistent towns of Mutual and Latuda. Pappas is an adjacent property owner. the fifth high-intensi- detonates the explosion. Photographing the blast allows researchers to methodically piece together how the material breaks apart. In addition to providing a photographic record of the fracture process, the camera is useful in examining the detonation mechanics of various explosive agents. frames per second. Now we can track faster events, says McCarter. Fractures occur very quickly. With our previous equipment, a lot that happened between frames couldnt be detected. That isnt the case now. And the resolution of the photographs is surprisingly good. In mining, the amount of damage caused by using explosives must be controlled to guard against the cave-i- n of undergoing mine walls and the collapse of open-pi- ty data-collecti- previous camera, which photographed only 35,000 t benches. In the U experiments, the Hercules blast chamber is McCarter says good ground breakage is necessary to allow efficient excavation by power shovels, draglines, scrapers and varius other mining machines. Because blasting is the first step in comminution, it was only logical for the college to develop facilities to investigate blast fragmentation. Coupled with comminution, the excavation and transportation of ore and waste are the major factors influencing the cost of mining in the United States. The model is instrumented and the explosive charge detonator tied into a safety interlock system before the blast chamber is lowered over the model. In an adjacent laboratory, the camera is placed behind a viewing port. From inside the main laboratory, the safety interlock is removed and the firing system charged to over 3000 volts. Closing the system switch touches off a chain reaction that opens the camera shutter, activates a strobe, triggers the system and McCarter.
