COLUMBIA QUEEN OF THE YACHTING WORLD COLUMBIA linb SECOND RACE in mittet rit tet time in yacht race in gale in the fastest yacht race ever sailed columbia took the second race of the ser es with shamrock it thursday in a glorious whole sail breeze which heeled the b g cup contestants down I 1 their lee rails were awash ID the foaming seas over a triangular course of thirty miles by two and efty two seconds actual time with the forty three seconds which the irish sloop must allo v the american boat on account of her larger sail plan the columb a won the second race of the series by three minutes thirty five see ands the fastest race ever sailed in a cup contest it was not only a royal gle from a spectacular point of view but it was absolutely dec ive as to the merits of the two racing machines there is not a yachting sharp who witnessed the race who is not firmly convinced that the defender is the abler boat blow h gh or blow low beat nac reaching or running and that sir chomas and his merry british tars are doomed to return home empty handed the wind was strong and true blow ing around e knots from the northwest and at every point of rac ing except perhaps running before the wind in which the defender has already taken the measure of the chal lenger the yankee sloop proved her self abler than the watson model from the t mesi e crossed the starting line one minute and thirty four sec ands behind the mug 1 unter until she picked up and passed the irish boat three miles after rounding the second mark columb a a pace was faster and II 11 valiant but vanquished she behaved better than her rival beaching for the first mark ten miles down the long wand bhore with the wind aft the beam she gained twenty two seconds in the closer reach for the second stake ahe gained thirty seconds and in the thresh to windward on the leg home she gained exactly two m autee the yankee victory began with the start when the crafty barr by a tern of mane iveing convinced his ad that he was try ing to cross the line first captain sycamore promptly took the bait and rushing his boat into pos tion sent her away almost in the smoke of the gun thereupon captain barr having accorn pl shed his purpose tacked about back of the line and held off for moie than a minute then with a flying start he went over just before the 1 and cap gun was fired some of the patriots were d until the experts explained that there was no w adward berth in a reach where the boats could lay their course stra ht for the mark and with a po astern where barr could kep his eye on every move of h rival waa the commanding one he watch sycamore like a hawk knowing that when the gap between them was closed the ace was his for the first fifteen miles no human eye could tell wl ch ship if either was gaining so closely were they matched but gradually it became apparent that the columbia was over hauling the flying challenger slowly inch by inch and foot by foot the white boat gained they were going at a terrible pace everything in the altet had to crowd on steam to keep the racers in s and the gait at which they were going left tugs and some of the steamboats astern the guide boat which started fifteen minutes before the racers shot out at full spec 1 but she was hardly able to leg off the distance and get tl e float avei board before the racers were upon her the columb a sailed the thirty miles in 3 13 18 the fastest time ever made in such a race when asked what he thought of the race asir thomas L owner of the E challenger said I 1 admit frankly tl at I 1 got 1 eked by the best boat in a fair and square race and I 1 maintain and believe that there is not a better skipper afloat than captain sycamore byc amore nor a better crew than mine I 1 have a much esteem for my captain and crew as when I 1 came to this side but they can t es they took as much out of the boat as could be taken I 1 am very much d sap pointed at the result added S r thomas and the only consolation is that I 1 know I 1 have been licked by a good honora opponent I 1 know that the wind was true and that tl e columbia won without any flukes THE AMERICA CUP |
