Utah elk - success story By HEATHER WELKER Information manager, DWR Elk hunting in southeast Utah, which begins Wednesday, is expected to be good this year. Both the Manti and LaSal Mountain herds have increased over the last year. The majority of the harvest is expected to be spike bulls with occasionally older bulls found. The best habitat for elk is generally aspen, which supplies elk with both cover and forage. Hunters should be aware of boundaries for hunt units and private lands. Please review the current Utah Big Game Proclamation for details. Elk herds were prevalent throughout the mountainous areas of northern and central Utah prior to settlement by white man. Unrestricted hunsettlement ting following eliminated most of the elk from their natural ranges by the turn of the century. Only the Uinta Mountains supported a native elk herd in Utah when this state entered into the first interstate elk transplanting program. Closed seasons on elk began in 1898. Interstate elk transplants were started in 1912, and continued until 1925. The Manti National Forest was one of several areas throughout Utah to receive elk from Yellowstone National Park. The newly transplanted elk adapted to their Utah home and began reproducing satisfactorily. The story of elk in Utah is certainly a successful one. Elk permit sales in the last five years have stabilized to slightly less than 28,000 permits. Virtually everyone who wishes to hunt elk in Utah has the opportunity to do so. CHS loses to Springville The Carbon High Lady Dinos lost to Springville Tuesday 15-- 8 and 15-1- 3. Coach Jim Mieure said the game started out slow as both teams went through an entire rotation before a point was scored. Then Springville ran off straight points and the Dinos could never get back in the 6 game. In the second game Mieure said the Dinos had a chance, but missed serves, including three in a row at one point, killed their chances.
