Show Tuesday, October 27, 1987 Sun Advocate, Price, Utah3A Memorial to miners dedicated Saturday The tragedy of May 1, 1900 when two hundred miners were killed at the nearby Winter Quarters coal mine will be memorialized at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at dedication ceremonies of an impressive rock monument. The ceremonies will be held at the Scofield cemetery where most of the 200 miners were buried after the 1900 disaster. Sponsoring the ceremonies is a new organization, Friends of Carbon-Emer- y what once stood in the canyon west of Scofield. On Saturday at 10:30 a.m. a memorial will be dedicated to the memory I County Historical Sites. On Oct. 3, this organization sponsored a similar ceremony dedicating a monument at Castle Gate, commemorating the disaster of March 8, 1924, when 172 miners died in a coal mine explosion. The monument is about seven feet high from its base and about four feet wide. The rock was selected from stone native to the southeastern Utah area. Rock sculptor was Harry P. Liapis, Helper. The plaque was designed by Gary Prazen, renowned bronze sculptor from Carbonville. Text on the plaque will describe the disaster. The names of all of the 200 miners killed in the disaster will be listed on the plaque and will be read during the ceremonies. Program for the Scofield dedication include these events: Continental breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. at Fins Inn, Scofield. 10:30 a.m. dedication ceremonies at the Scofield cemetery. Noon luncheon at the Scofield LDS Church recreation hall ($5 per person). All faiths 2:30 p.m.. religious services; meet at the memorial obelisk of the Order of Odd Fellows, at the Scofield cemetery. Reservations for the luncheon may be made with Beth secretary, Friends of The ceremony will take place at the Scofield cemetery where a large stone and bronze monument has been erected. Donors of $300 or more will have their names engraved on the bronze plaques at both the Castle Gate and the Scofield monuments. According to Chris S. Metos, Salt Lake City, chairman of the state-wid- e dediction committee, the plaques will be emplaced on the rock monuments early next year. All donors will be listed in the dedication program. Donations to the monuments may be mailed directly to Zions First National Bank, PO Box 111, 45 South Carbon Avenue, Price, Utah 84501, with checks made payable to Friends of dedication are Joni Denison and Becci Denison, Scofield. Speakers at the dedication program will include Dr. A.
