Show Tuesday, May 26, Rules changed at Huntington North Largemouth bass fishing in Huntington North Reservoir has been changed dramatically in 1987. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has installed a special regulation to protect bass in this local water. The regulation places a only stipulation for bass. This means that all bass caught by anglers at Huntington North Reservoir must be immediately released back into the water. The division imposed this regulation to stop the overharvest of large sized bass above 12 inches. Recent creek census information indicates that about 600 bass are harcatch-and-relea- vested annually se from this reservoir. Of this harvest, over 80 percent are adult fish over 12 inches. Though bass grow well in Huntington North Reservoir, it still takes two and years for these fish to reach adulthood. A division survey in 1986 using electrogear indicated that aduk bass numbers have declined 57 percent over the past four years. Such a decline can reduce the amount of spawning adults, thereby reducing the number of juvenile bass being recruited each year into the population. Also, large bass are good predators on the various forage one-ha- lf bass are eliminated, these forage fish tend to overpopulate a reservoir. Many small fish create poor fishing and unsatisfied anglers. The division has therefore taken two steps to help the bass fishery: the only regulation to protect large bass; and stocking of 160 adult bass to stimulate natural reproduction and maintain a predatorforage balance. These stocked adults were taken from Lake Powell and marked with a numbered red tag. Castle Valley Bass Masters, a local bass club, has helped sign the reservoir to remind anglers of the new regulation. They also assisted in capturing and tagging the Lake Powell bass for stocking. Please call the Price office if you catch a tagged bass (637-3310- se ). When angling for bass, recommended that only by ed mckeever it is ar- tificial lures be used. Baits usually hook too deep, causing increased mortality. Note also that bluegill and crayfish can still be harvested under regular proclamation law (1987). With this new regulation, it is predicted that trophy sized bass will again be taken at Huntington North Reservoir over the next few years and maybe even a state record. For a journalist, the term 30- means 30to the the end. For me, Im saying Sun Advocate and Carbon County. And Im saying it with mixed emotion. On Jan. 2, 1985, 1 walked through the back door of the Sun Advocate for my first day as a professional journalist. Since then, I have learned more than I ever expected I would and it has been a terrific experience. The people of Carbon County have been very, for the most part, receptive to me. Thank you for letting me into your homes and your lives to photograph a part of them. It has been a pleasure. Thanks have to go to the coaches at Carbon High, East Carbon High and CEU. Your cooperation made my job easier and Im going to miss Monday morning rounds to pick up scores and stats. A big thanks has to go to sports writer Walt Borla. When ever I thought I was going to be short of copy, all I had to do was call Walt and let him know I needed a column from him. Thanks for all youve done for me, Walt. And to the bunch at the Sun Advocate youve been a great gang to work with. Long will Mondays live in my mind as that is the closest Ive ever seen to mass hysteria. Ive never worked at a place where so many worked so closly together for a common good. Thanks for the good memories. Carbon County and the whole Castle Valley are a unique places. I think the people of the area have made it most interesting. Where else in the west are there so many nationalities represented? The neat part has been how many go about keeping hold of their heritage. Prime examples are the Greek Festival and the Slovenian Picnic which are annual events that remind those about their culture and share it with those who are unfamilier with it. What a place. But the time has come for me to advance in my career. At the Coeur dAlene Daily Press, Ill be in charge of photography, an area where Id like to devote all of my efforts. But if it werent for the Sun Advocate, I dont think I could be making such a move. My portfolio now has a slice of Carbon County in it. Photos from the Notre Dame Carnival, Scofield Pleasant Valley Days and many other events are represented in my portfolio.
