Show r 2A Sun Advocate, Price, Utah Tr m frii MP fWfMpVfe Tuesday, May 26, 1987 Board told Don't move ninth grade footballers Joe Mower, president of the Carbon Youth Football League and a parent, told board of education members Thursday that his organization is opposed to allowing ninth graders to play high school football. Moving ninth graders to the high school program presents many problems including the fact that because of their immaturity many of the young students do not have a positive playing experience, he said. In addition, taking the ninth graders out of the junior high program leaves eighth graders with no football program. Mower said that during the past year the eighth graders played in the Carbon Youth Football League which is intended only for sixth and seventh grade youngsters. This resulted in additional injuries because of the disparity in maturity between the eight graders and sixth and seventh graders and it also strained finances of the CYFL. We are independent and have spent $12,000 on equipment in recent years Mower said. The youth football league receives no governmental financing and is unable to absorb the cost of an expanded program for eight graders as well as sixth and seventh graders, he said. Under the old plan the eighth and ninth grade students played in a junior high school league. He said that it also would be a burden on parents in Helper to transport ninth grade players to Carbon High School for football practice. Supt. Ell B. Sorenson said that a committee of administrators and coaches is considering the matter and has not yet reached a decision.
