Show Recreation & Tourist Guide, May, 198615 Huntington Lake is fun in the sun By KAYE HARRIS Staff writer The clear, blue lake glistens as the morning sun peaks over the mountains and begins to warm up the lake and surrounding area in an- ticipation for a day full of activities. This beautiful lake is right in our neighboring backyard, Emery County. Huntington Lake and state park is about 20 minutes from downtown Price and a close, convenient way to day. spend a The state recreation area was developed by the Bureau of Reclamation and is operated by Utah Parks and Recreation. It costs only $2 a vehicle to get in for the day. Where else can you spend $2 for an entire carload of people and have as much fun? Huntington Lake was built in 1965-6and is operated by the Emery Water Conservancy District. The lake covers about 300 surface acres and is, at the deepest spot 76 feet. Huntington Lake in the morning, or afternoon, or evening for that matter, is great for water skiing, if your an avid fan of the sport, as I am. There is nothing better then to lower the boat down into the water first thing in the morning when the lake looks like a clear, shiny mirror, take a trial spin around, and get the first skier ready. One of the best things about the lake is that it is warm, really warm, so you dont have to worry about freezing in between having fun and crashing. Although the lake is quite small, a couple times around on skis, or a ski (depending on whether you or some good friends have a boat so you can increase your skiing abilities), can really tire one out. You know, its funny how everyone has their way and method of slalom skiing and their way is always the right way. Ive always been able to drop a ski and go, but Ive never been able to get my foot in the back of the ski. fun-fill- ed 6 Need a break? Go fishing. So finally, my last time out I got my foot back and went around, using my own method. I happen to think my method worked quite well, also. The latest rage in water fun is hydrosliding. Although I havent tried it, the people Ive been with have, and it looks like a blast. Its a padded board about 4x2 feet and you kneel on it with a strap over your knees and the boat pulls you, just like skiing. You can get pretty tricky on those slides. One day Ill get brave enough to try it. One doesnt have to own a boat to have fun at Huntington, although I must admit it does help; there are many other things to do. My dad is a fishing fan, I would say fanatic, but I wont because he might be upset with me. But, there are some good looking blue gill, bass and rainbow trout in the lake. There are nice camping places for trailers and campers with bathrooms and MASTER showers close by. Camping is a night and special group arrangements can be made with the ranger. There is a big pavillion with nice shady picnic tables to hold parties or reunions. Closer down to the lake there are also tables for quick conveniences. Fire pits are scattered along through the grounds to roast or cook a good dinner. Hotdogs are my personal camping favorite. There is also a big grassy area good for frisbee throwing, volleyball, football and all kinds of games. Kids and their parents can always be found swimming off the sandy banks. Inner tubes and rubber mats are relaxing to just lay in the water and soak in some of those summer rays for a good tan. So next time your bored and dont know what to do, just go on out to Huntington Lake with family or friends for a variety of fun activities. I think I will go for fun and skiing next time my dad has a day off. $6 EL RANCHO MOTEL 525 E. 3 911 E. 100 wvwww f MUFFLER 637-449- Paul Labrum, Huntington, scans the water for fish while dangling a piece of fishing line off the dock. ww ww wwwwww' Main Business Loop), 0 Green River, UT North, Price PRICE, UTAH TRUCK STOP 32 Full Service Station Automotive Needs Mini Market 564-349- 5 Motel Units, AAA Color TV, Cable TV, HBO Full RESTAURANT GIFT SHOP Hook-u- p For Trailer Park & Shower v 564-824- 0 Facilities tgfl WESTWINDS Rodeway inn 564-342- 1 MASTER MUFFLER Your Specialist for Brakes, Mufflers, Shocks Foreign American Cars & Trucks & ALL SERVICES Open 24 Hours 7 Days 637-242- 4 West of Price 394 W.
