The season was finished Friday in the first round of state play with Judge Memorial. A much more agressive Judge team overpowered the Dinos to pick up a 0 win. That knocked the Carbon team out of the 9-- tournament. Coach Mike Kernodle said Carbon came on to the field and Richard Schade took the ball right down and got a good shot on the goal, but that was about the only real highlight for Carbon in the first half of the game. Kernodle said the team would play pretty good for short periods. Judge, however, would go down, score and then be able to score again on penalty shots. dont know if it was pure or not, he said. frustration With several penalty shots to their credit, the Judge team had built a 0 lead by the end of the first half. 6-- Kernodle said the second half was a better game for the Dinos, but still not enough to play catch-u- p enough to win, much less score. We just couldnt put enough pressure on them, the Dino coach said. Member Size 6 1.37 Our 1.1 7, - Pleasant Grove, however, pulled off a 1 win over the Dinos, building their lead in the about 10 minutes left in the game. We moved along. They were frantically trying to keep us out and were were frantically trying to get in, he said. Kernodle said Carbon had a slow first half but the second was better and their lone goal came from Bryan Tierney. Schade had two or three good attempts on the goal, Kernodle said and worked extra hard in getting the ball down the field and getting the shot set up. Tierneys goal came with Goalie Tom Potter also had several good saves toward the end of the game which prevented Pleasant Grove from raising the score further. It was by the skin of our teeth that we didnt tie them up and take them to at least overtime, Kernodle said. Grove. 2-- first half. XFlshAmertca Oft Panther Martin spinning lures in tempting colors. Still, it was important for us to get to state, Kernodle said, especially since this team is so young. Fighting last out of the Price club was Ray Montoya, Jr. Montoya, fighting in the 125 lb., division, was matched up against Jay Burr out of the Vernal Boxing Club. This fight was very important to Montoya, as he is trying and working very hard to compete and win at the regionals, so as to be eligible to compete at the nationals in North Carolina next month. He scored an eight count over Burr in the first round. Within the first minute of the second round he scored another eight count and within a minute and a half of the second round, the referee had to stop the fight because Burr was about to go down. The Price Elks Club wound up with David Perez, Tayo Perez, and Ray Montoya., each receiving a gold medal and a bronze medal for J.J. Thomas. The club also received the team trophy for the division, thanks to David and Tayo Perez. There were only three bouts in this division and the club was very happy to win this team trophy. The three boys with gold medals are now eligible to compete in the regionals at Albuquerque, N.M. Montoya is the only one of the three who, if successful at the regionals, may advance to the nationals at Raleigh, N.C. next month. This is because only the class is eligible at the nationals for the Junior Olympic Championships. Legion practice begins The first practices for Helper American Legion Baseball will be this Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Helper ball park. Fudd Managers Elvin Juliano and John Gianini invite all prospective Legion players eligible to play this year to come out Saturday. To be eligible, players must not be over 18 years old by July 31. |
