Color Limitation petition drive has been thwarted by people who ask for petitions and then destroy them, according to volunteer coordinator Bette Johnson. Some people have called in asking for large numbers of petitions. They said they would tention of signatures, Johnson reported. One only $429 We have no way of determining how widespread these sabotage efforts have been, so we have printed up petitions with another 60,000 signature lines to add to the original 100,000. About 145,000 of these have been assigned to volunteers but only 20,000 signatures had been turned in by May 16. We must have at least 63,000 valid signatures to qualify for the ballot and we have only two weeks left before the deadline, she said. Our biggest hindrance has not been the misappropriated petitions, it has ironically been the popularity of the measure. Because nine out of ten people are eager to sign, volunteers get the mistaken notion that qualifying for the ballot is a piece of cake. collecting Group takes $5,000 from Safeway store Price City Police officers are investigating the theft of about $5,000 from the Safeway store in Price last weekend. Chief Luke Owings said a group of people from out of the area entered the store about 10 a.m. Saturday and got the attention of the store manager and the checkers by asking for assistance. Owings said two men parently entered ap- the store shortly after and took money. After the group left, it was discovered that about $5,000 was missing. Owings said the scheme is very common and was attempted in Price about IV2 years ago by a similar group. He was unsure how large a group of people were involved, where they came from or where they went after leaving the store. Opponents of the limitation, who are mainly public employee groups and teacher unions, are already using scare tactics to try to erode the broad support the petition already has, she said.
