Show r "" Recreation & Tourist Guide, May, 198613 More than fishing at Joe's Valley By BRANDON FORD Staff writer Even though I have lived next door to Emery County for almost two years now I had never been to Joes Valley Reservoir until this week. I am sorry now that I waited so long. Had I known what a beautiful place it was my family and I could have enjoyed it sooner and more often. It is not a long drive to get there either. From when we filled up the car in Price it is 50 miles to Joes Valley Reservoir on good roads. Joes Valley is easy to get to even if you have never been there before. The route is marked with brown road signs. From Price go south on State Road 10. About six miles south of Huntington turn right on the turn-ofor Orangeville and Joes Valley (it is clearly marked with direction signs) . About four miles after the turn-of- f you will get to Orangeville. Half way through the town there is a fork in the ff road; turn Another driving canyon right miles (north). or so of a scenic through and you are to the 19 a HANSEN BROTHERS reservoir. We left for Joes Valley with the intention of enjoying the reservoir and then going 10 miles north to a place called Indian Springs. But muddy roads stopped us from going all the way to the Indian Springs Campground. I understand the springs are a beautiful place but last weeks rains and the clay road combined to make the roads too greasy to handle in my car, although someone with a truck would most likely not have a problem. I was sorry I was not able to make it up to the Indian Springs campground. The elevation of the campground is very high -- - just below and east of Skyline Drive. Consequently the nights are cool even in July and August so my friend recommended a heavy sleeping bag if you stay overnight. One of the things that made the campground at Indian Springs so appealing to my friend is that it is more remote than the campgrounds around the reservoir. Another reason is that there is almost no traffic past the campground. f; the way to Indian Springs we did find a nice place to picnic about half way there. It was near Indian Creek and the kids had a lot of fun playing in a sandy spot near the creek while the hamburgers cooked over the fire. Before lunch we spent some time skipping rocks on the reservoir. The water there is some of the clearest lake water Ive seen in Utah. From the shore it was dif- - friend described it as being filled with quakies and pines. The campsites themselves are covered with long grass and very little underbrush. A stream flows just west of the campground and upstream are some beaver dams which privide some fishing. There is a group area where the Forest Service has built a volleyball court. The court is leveled and covered with fine gravel. There is no net so grups need to provide their own net and ball.
