By GARY ANDERSON Agricultural agent I am receiving quite a number of calls now about lawn problems. I have seen a number of them myself. White grubs are starting to be of concern. White grubs are the larvae of a moth. They feed in the root zone and cause irregular shaped patches of dead or drying grass. Usually in severe cases you can grab the turf and pull it right off the ground like a piece of rotten carpet. are also a Sod webworms cause for concern we may or may not have now. These pests feed at ground level damaging the grass as it comes out of the soil. Both of these pests can be controlled by applications of dursban or diazinon. Be sure to follow the directions on the label. Some fungus problems are appearing in lawns. Some of the fungus can be treated and some can be managed around. For example, the snow mold that some people have had problems with the last couple of years is an example of a fungus we can treat with management. For specific problems ask for our pamphlet on lawn care. Finally, excessive fertilizing can cause spots in our lawns that look like we have a disease so be careful how you apply fertilizer to your lawn.
