Home fans like to win and win big and established powers dont have to worry about creating a schedule that will impress anyone. They dont expect to lose those games and rarely do. Its big money for the victim. Which is why BYU was able to upgrade its schedule to include teams like Pitt, Texas and Miami. But the Cougars dont seem to be willing to follow the script. They didnt lose at Pittsburgh or Texas. They play at Miami Dec. 3. And Glen Tuckett was able to capitalize on the schools growing reputation and the 65,000 seats in Cougar Stadium to get home and home commitments from many of those national powers. ESPN officials must have breathed a 6igh of relief last Thursday night since the Cougars have two more dates this year on the sports cable network. It was obvious that the rather large contingent of Texans who followed their team to Provo had tuned in to watch Wyoming humble the Cougars the previous week. They were in a very good mood as they arrived and filled a goodly portion of the lower north end zone. It was a pretty desolate place at games end, however. And on a week night; after a big loss. Wow! Some of them even wore blue. They were almost rowdy, despite the fact that you wouldnt have found very many willing to put down any money on the Cougars chances before the game. They gave the team a rousing welcome, no doubt wanting to show the nation a little class. But the best part was that despite the lopsided score television, usually at the Cotton Bowl. It was there in abundance ear full. I dont recall ever being more impressed with the people who follow their team than these. It wasnt just the "Hook em Horns" and the band playing "The Eyes of Texas Are Upon You." These people cheered their team, but they didnt find it necessary to rub it into the BYU crowd when Texas made a good play -- - the possessions Longhorn early looked promising indeed. In the restrooms at half-tim- e they were very polite and I didnt even hear anyone complain about the absence of beer at the concession stands like the Wyoming faithful do. Heck they werent even moaning about the caffeine free Coke. Like I do. I almost felt .sorry for them when they took their early exit. Probably because I would have done the same thing in Laramie the previous week. I really didnt expect to be impressed. I was prepared to resent them, their team, the cowbells and that too familiar Hook em Homs. But then I didnt hold out. much hope for the Cougars even winning that game, let alone admininstering the pasting they did. I know one game doth not a season make (thank goodness). But when Covey launched that pass to Doman, the thrill was definitely back. Bring on those Miners. BYU No one who has followed college football over the years could possibly be unfamiliar with the passion with which Texans follow their team. Ive lost count of the number of times Ive seen that "Hook em Horns sign" on and the fact that the first string retired early and the game was inordinately lengthy, the overwhelming majority stayed until the end for a change. They did the wave, managed to swipe the football when the net didnt hold it and generally showed the visiting Texas fans that we know our football. Though the Texans were long gone by the end of the game. But the Texans showed us a thing or two as well. Our seats are just above those reserved for the visiting contingent, so we always get a pretty good look at OUR READERS WRITE Not Buying ll Mahatma Gandhi to assassinate Lee Harvey Oswald, but because of distractions occasioned by a torrid love affair with Marilyn Monroe, signals get crossed, and J. And insulting to all who have a high regard for any or all of the people mentioned above... and that is the point. But wait a minute! Our reviewers tell us that this movie was directed with "great care and devotion," that it contains acting performances that are "deep and well thought out," "major bits of inspiration" characterize the casting, and "sensible" and "masterful" describe just about everything else in it. Then, to top things off we are told that this "very special film should inspire dialogue" between white supremists and civil rights groups. With all this going for it, we certainly have another film on our hands. The fact that Hollywood has once again been playing fast and loose with accuracy and truth should not detract from the fact that this is a See my point? "magnificent film". Or should it? "The Last Temptation of Christ" is not a good film- as in "goodness." "good" meaning "Magnificent" it may well be, but then that is a word that could be used to describe the courts of Henry VIII or Genghis Khan. Many (and Hollywood has its share of these) are "masterful" at their trade, and capable of laying plans that are "deep and well thought out;" and warped as it may appear, apply their craft with "much care and devotion." And exist because they know that many people can be easily "swayed." Thanks anyway, Mr. Cartwright, but Im not buying this . Regarding Mark Cartwrights review of "The Last Temptation of Christ," in your issue of Sept. 1. Mr. Cartwright calls it a "Magnificent film." It was, he tells us, "directed with great care and devotion." It contains acting that is "deep and well thought out," casting that was a "major bit of inspiration," "sensible" and "masterful writing and photography. We are told that the film informs us at the outset that the script of the movie is not based on the gospels. He then shares with us a couple of episodes from the film which show beyond question that the film and the gospels, indeed, have nothing to do with each other. He then suggests that this "very special film" may even have great social value because it "should inspire dialogue between the various religions." Movies and literature have always made use of historical persons in works of fiction, but they have usually made at least an effort to portray said persons in character true to what we know of them. This time they seem to have studied the characters of the New Testament, and then gone out of their way to depict them as sharp opposites. This could set an interesting precedent. While hoping that a movie will never be made of the plot I am about to describe, lets take a look at one possibility. In the year AD????, Hollywood, after much travail, releases a movie depicting persons and events in the American of the 1960s. They inform us at the outset (very open and above board, Hollywood is), that the script is not based on books of history or biography, but is a fictional work using figures from the past. The story is about Martin Luther king, member of the secret inner circle of the KKK, who has one. penetrated the civil rights movement with an eve toward undermining its objectives. He hires Ethan L. On Aug. 3, 1987, in unprecedented voter turnout, the community of Magna elected a representative 11 member council, which within three weeks, elected officers, appointed committee chairmen, surveyed individual districts for needed safety and capital improvements and voted to request immediate installation of traffic lights at the intersections of 2700 So. 8400 West, and 3500 So. 8000 West. The light at 2700 West has since been installed and as noted in last weeks council meeting, has "done wonders" to slow traffic on 8400 West and to make the street safer for school children. Also, in the same meeting, a letter from Utah Dept, of Transportation to the Magna Area Council was read reporting that requests for bids on the traffic signal for 8000 W. 3500 South should be advertised this month with installation occurring late this fall or early next spring. In September, 1987, in a most productive joint meeting of MAC and key people from UDOT and Salt Lake County, an eight page list of needed capital improvements for Magna was prioritized and set in motion; and, in December, MAC members and Commissioner Dave Watson and his department heads toured Magna from boundary to boundary observing needed improvements and listening to citizen input. As a direct result of input from community members and MAC members, with UDOT officials and SLCo. Public Works, the following progress has been made on -- safety-relate- d projects: W. 2700 South - $30,000 Community Development (CD) funds approved for curb, gutter and sidewalk for the safety of children walking to and from Pleasant Green elementary. Project should be completed by spring of 1989. 2700-310- 0 So. 9200 West - $15,000 CD funds approved for design and engineering for curb, gutter and sidewalk for the safety of children walking to Webster elementary. Funds for the completion of this project will be requested next year. Valley Forge Road - Approval of SLCo. funds for completion of roadway and curb gutter and sidewalk for patrons of Copperhills elementary. Construction of this project should begin this week. 3680 So. 8400 West - $3,500 CD funds approved for installation of street lights by residential area and mobile home park. This was the location of a fatal nighttime accident. UDOT will furnish lights and SLCo. will maintain. 8400 West is a major road in our community that runs through five of the 11 council districts; and the safety of the school children of Magna elementary, Brockbank jr. high and Cyprus high school and the users of this road is a major concern to this council. State safe sidewalk money had been previously 8000-806- 3 n approved for construction of sidewalk on the we side of 8400 West between 2770 and 3032 Sout After careful study of the existing sidewalks, tl routes of school children, the locations and causes accidents on 8400 West and the consideration limited funds, input from parents, residents, UDC and SLCo. Highways, it was the consensus of MAC that "the use of safe sidewalk opini mom between 2770 and 2910 South cannot be justified there are no children living north of 2910 South 8400 West nor would any school-ag- e children u this as a route to any school. Furthermore, tl installation of sidewalk along this underdevelop stretch would be particularly expensive because the open ditch and many trees. The Area Coum has determined the specific needs for safe sidewall on the west side of 8400 West to be: 1) 3680 to 351 South, 2) 3500 to 3396 South, and 3) 3032 to 2928 2910 South. In addition to providing safe sidewall for many children as they walk to school, 1) wou provide safe walking for the occupants of the mobi home park to the communitys commercial center Pa fof shopping, banking and libra facilities. While the Magna Area Council requests that th very linuted State safe sidewalk funds (or othe funds) be expended where they will benefitany the mos children, the council realized that money alone wi not buy safety on 8400 West.
