Babes in Toyland, City Reps Christmas offering now playing at Kingsbury Hall, is a winner. The lilting Victor Herbert music, the traditional melodrama and comedy are all there in abundance, livened by colorful, costuming and scenery and the delightful antics of a . well-traine- d cast. And thats no easy task with a cast this size, especially considering the number of children involved. Joanne Parker and choreographers Lenore d Cambria and Julie Orlob can take a bow for this one. And while we are passing out compliments, Richard Chatelain and his orchestra deserve a big one for a wonderful job. As for the cast, there were so many and all deserving of applause, from the hero and heroine to the smallest lamb. Outstanding were the comedy leads, Duane Stephens and David Glaittli who handled the roles of Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee. Randall Hickman as Barnaby was the villain you love to hate with Doug Davis as his sidekick, Rumple. equally well-caWhy the audience didnt respond with the traditional boos and hisses as those villainous characters threatened and coerced Bo Peep, beautifully played by Jennifer 0"Haley. Ill never know. Their interaction with Bo and with Widow Peep (Linda Smith) were a delight. Bo Peep and Tom Tom, played by Jim Miller, well-earne- st 7 p.m. GRANGER CHRISTIAN CHURCHS 5. - 0 were also well matched. Their songs were a highlight of a show full of highlights. Jeff Taylor gave us a kindly toymaker and Cliff Cole was a lifelike Santa and presented a pleasing performance of the title song. The only complaint I have was the'March of the , Wooden Soldiers." Always a scene stealer in this play, the number was cut to virtually nothing and I missed it. Thanks to Chatelain and the orchestra, who swung into the music in fine style after the curtain call, we were able to sit back down and enjoy the number, although most of the audience was leaving. The orchestra outdid itself. It almost (but not quite) made up for the lack of attention to the number during the show. The choreography and direction, however, lacked nothing. The children were a joy. The little lambs especially captivated the audience, and the toy ballet was beautifully done. The show is, of course, froth. But it is delightful froth and just the thing for Christmas. If you have a child available, or can borrow one, dont miss this visit to fairyland. Even if you dont, its still a fun show. Youll find all the familiar nursery rhyme and fairy tale characters, and as Dickens once said, there is no better time of year to be a child than at Christmas. In Toyland Babes Saturday.
