Show I THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, December 17, 1987 Letters Drinking Too Much And Killing Someone Is No Accidental Event there has been a significant dethe percentage of traffic deaths related to alcohol in the past five years, drunk driving remains the number one killer on our roads. In 1986 41 percent of the total traffic deaths involved at least one driver or pedestrian who was intoxicated. That's down from 46 percent in 1982. Teen statistics are also down from 28 percent percent to 21 percent in that same time period. As promising as improved statistics are, they are not much comfort to the families and friends of the 19,000 people killed last crashes. Drunk driv year in alcohol-relateers dont kill numbers. They kill people Young fathers, promising athletes and schol ars, mothers, sisters, grandparents, brothers, close friends. Inasmuch as alcohol seems to play a major role in how people socialize and this is the season where socializing is at its peak, we face a significant challenge in convincing people to use alcohol in moderation and to ivoid driving after drinking. Tougher laws, more enforcement and increased public and media attention have had an impact on the problem. Many responsible people have gotten the message, but the problem is far from solved. Although cline Editorial in d To the Editor: 1 We continue to be too tolerant of a dangerous minority who leave parties, bars and restaurants with attitudes like "I drive better when Im drunk, "Ive only had a few and " "Nobody drives my car but me It may be difficult as a host to stick your neck out and actively prevent someone from driving who has been celebrating too much. But isnt it better to call a cab, offer a ride or provide a bed than to allow friends or coworkers to put themselves and others at risk? The adage about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure is appropriate when developing strategies to curb drunk drivers. Drunk driving is preventable. People know better and must be held accountable for their actions. Drinking too much and then getting behind the wheel and killing someone is not an accidental event. Drunk driving is not only a national tragedy, it is a national disgrace. As we celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of a new one, let us each individually resolve to do our part to eliminate this disgrace. When My Feet Fit Under Their Table, They Made The Rules we learn to appreciate that which makes us a better person. A younger parent once told my mother she was afraid her children wouldnt love her if she disciplined them. The kids she run your feet fit under my table, youll do as I say." With those words, my mother pretty well instilled in me her of brand own particular discipline. I thought about that the other night as I heard on television that Mountain Bell now has a service whereby parents can have access to 796 numbers blocked to keep their children from running up large toll billings from calling various "services" raised are the kind that only a Mom could love. mother responded, "Well, mine may not love me, but they will respect me." personally dont think corporal punishment is the answer to keeping children in line, but an occasional swat on the behind served to remind me that rules were not made to be broken. I Children, you know, have far more sense that they are given credit for. with those prefixes. Bell Ma is charging the purveyors of such messages for the service, which is only right. I thought, "How nice. How fair." Then I thought about my own childhood. My mother would not have had to subscribe to a service that would have prevented me from making a toll call. My own fear of the consequences of doing so would have been sufficient. I know, times have changed. And in some ways, thats too bad. Like every kid. I suppose, I had a mean mother. thought And like most of those in my generation, I was glad I did. At least when all was said and done. I didnt live in mortal fear of my parents, but I had a healthy respect for the consequences of be actions I knew would unacceptable in our family. Are kids really so different today? I wonder what it was in I our upbringing that instilled in us respect for authority? And at the same time created a generation that seems to be afraid to exercise that authority in behalf of its own young. When surveys are done, most young people today say they wish would that place parents restraints on them. We used to recognize it as a sign that they really cared about us. I think kids today recognize that same truth, which may be an eternal one. Sure, they fight against it, thats human nature, But in the long We did. Both. Love goes hand in hand with respect. Most of all, I appreciate what she did for my development as a person. Our society is different today. Many mothers have to work outside the home. Perhaps they feel guilty about laying down the law when they have such a limited amount of time to spend with their children. But home life will be much more pleasant if there is mutual respect. Maybe the problem lies in the work ethic. Our generation tends to be slightly lazy. Being a good parent requires a great deal of effort. Maybe we just arent willing to expend thp energy. It's easier to let the schools teach our kids good habits. Its easier to let Bell Mountain assume the responsibility for keeping our kids from unauthorized making telephone calls. Till,MBS 2 Save The Children Editor, If I would make a critical analysis of the news on any one of the three major television networks, it would be that these newscasters advocate the worst of both worlds. From the left they support the Communists that want to convert the world to the one lower class of the proletariat. If the Communists ever accomplish their mission, which seems very likely to happen, the Communists are not going to receive these people as their benefactors into their midst with open arms. They will have to suffer along with the rest of us poor souls. These newscasters also support the Sanaerian eugemsts of Planned Parenthood from the right, who are a carbon copy of the Nazis. By exterminating the lower and middle classes, these eugenists plan to convert the world to a Utopia of the upper class, if they ever achieve their goal, who is going to do the menial tasks? These eugenists have revealed their plan for Utopia in their frenzied thrust to establish the all powerful federal state that will control our every activity from the cradle to the grave and we will live only as long as we remain in the good graces of this state. The unborn today -tomorrow I and you. An old saying that I heard from a radio preacher when I was a boy is, "Truth that's crushed to earth shall rise again. Could it be that the Lord is using me, His humble servant, to resurrect it? Could it be that He has already planned to destroy us for our terrible transgressions and anything I or anyone else does will be to no avail? Time is imperative! Opt for good! Save yourself and your loved ones! An Often all they want is a reason why. "Because I said so" will only go so far, but a frank and open discussion as to why something is for their own good generally carries a great deal of weight. Jeppson, R.N., M.A. Wayne's Way Editor: The world would be in much better shape if everyone realized that people arent flesh, but spirit. So when we speak to another, were talking to their spirit while looking at their flesh. (Gal. 5:17). Furthermore, all spirits are created equal and all have exactly the same responsibilities of caring for the flesh they occupy. But its not difficult, for our flesh tells us when it needs to be fed, etc. Proof isnt needed because the evidence of a super intelligence is everywhere, from the tangible (natural beauty) to the intangible (hope) which even pets have when they look at you when theyre hungry. It then follows that one spirit cannot have authority over another, being created equal, for that would be unacceptable to our Creator, or the Governing outer dimension I call it, or G.o.d. if you will. It also follows that spirits cannot marry, nor can the flesh because it has only needs and no will, which is what the spirit (you) gives to the flesh. So the true marriage is you to your own flesh. The worlds problems arise from the Bible wherein it says that God created man in his own image, both male and female. Because of that, many feel they have the authority of God, but were only Gods of outraged grandfather eight angels, children. Cornelius U. Morgan Finally, we know the flesh dies, but what happens to us? This Christmas would be appropriate to consider what God does with bad spirits. The good ones return to marry the opposite gender human WVC flesh. Suggestion For Editor: Wayne I read with interest the controversy surrounding the West Valley City Planning Commission, and whether or not they should dictate how shrubs and trees should be planted in the front yards of new homes. If the Planning Commission is indeed concerned about improving the appearance of our city, perhaps they should zero in on residents who use their yards as a dumping ground for unlicensed stripped cars and other assorted junk and trash. For starters, the Planning Commission is welcome to come to my home and look at the view through my living room window. Sincerely, Gary K. Box 7 1 Hi, Murray, L'tah 81107. rrveAlive Editor: I have been following in the news, with great interest, the Salt Lake County Commissioners as they have been preparing the 1988 budget. Along with many other interested citizens, I attended the Thursday, Dec. 10 public budget hearing. I commend the County Commissioners, under the direction of Commission Chairman Bart Barker, for acting responsibly as they wrestled with the difficult problems. The commissioners refused to consider broad tax increases in spite of a very tight revenue picture. I applaud the commissioners for trimming nearly $15 million from proposed budgets and for reducing the size of government. All this being accomplished while Salt Lake Countys population continues to grow. The commissioners demonstrated sincere sensitivity in not eliminating programs that serve the truly needy or vital county services. Hats off to the Salt Lake County Commissioners for a fitting display of fiscal conservatism and responsible leadership. Richard II. Snelgrove, Chairman Salt Lake County Republican Farty i Buckle up your baby. A public service message from this newspaper and the Utah Department of Transportation. |
