Show Thursday, December THE GREEN SHEET 11 17, 1W7 No Quick Fix For Valley's Traffic Problems COG Is Told by Bob Mickelson Green Sheet Staff Writer SALT LAKE. There are no quick fixes to traffic problems in Salt Lake County, no ways to solve them cheaply. Thats the summation of a report Mick by Crandall, program director, Wasatch Front Regional Council, before the Salt Lake County Council of Governments last Wednesday night. Crandalls on the report Street Corridor Environment Impact Study delt with a wide variety of options, lrom doing nothing to adding lanes to the freeway to expanding the bus fleet to building a light rail system. All would prove costly in way or another. At present, the area of traffic congestion, northbound, usually begins between 5300 South and If nothing is done, Crandall reported that will lengthen all the way out to 10600 South by the year 2010. The addition of one traffic lane to the freeway would bring the jams back from 10600 to 9000 South but would require "some additional sources." revenue Thats on top of the $160 million worth of necessary rehab and pavement replacement work that already must be done on the off-pea- 2-- existing lanes. Adding two lanes would move the beginnings of congestion back to the area of 5300 South, but there would still leave trafic densities over that desirable for free to operation, according Crandall. Crandall also talked about the adding of high occupancy vehicle lanes, lanes used by car pools and buses during peak hours. These lanes could be made reversible, that its flowing one in the morning and the other way in the evening. However, Crandall felt that would not have much effect on the overall traffic picture. Among the other alternatives offered, would be expansion of the bus fleet andor building a light rail system on either the Union Pacific or State Street. Expanding the bus fleet would require, Crandall said, spending $90 million over the next 20 years. Constructing a light rail rail system would cost in the neighborhood of $225 million. Crandall estimated the light rail TAYLORSVILLE.
