F 1 THOUSANDS 3, 1987 You and Your Child: YOU CAN GET A on Thursday, December CHOOSE FROM! m by JIM CAMPBELL Utah Education Association President - - Often wc perhaps loo often adults talk about what we expect irom children without giving much consideration to the things children expect from us. Sometimes pollsters bother to survey young people, and the results probably should be heeded by parents and educators. When Learning Magazine writers asked eighth graders at Highland (Mich.) junior high school for their advice to teachers, they received some surprising answers. "Be one mean," sludent suggested, probably echoing student replies in other polls. Many students actually ask for teachers and parents to be more demanding. Some even say they want more homework assignments. Other recommendations from the Highland junior high students were: Dont be loo intelligent. (Possible translation: "Dont talk over our heads..") Dont yell. Dont give up on students. Be Be patient. and supportive reassuring. Youths confined in a Pennsylvania correctional institution gave some advice to parents, too. Heres some of it: "Light a candle. Show us the way. Tell us God is not dead, or sleeping, or on vacation. Wc need to believe in something bigger and stronger than ourselves. "Call our bluff. Make it clear that you mean what you say. Dont be wishy-washDont compromise. And dont be intimidated by our threats to drop out of school or leave home. Stand firm. If you collapse, wc will know we beat you down and we will not be happy about the victory. Kids dont want everything they ask for. "Bug us a little. Be strict and consistent in dishing out discipline. Show us whos boss. It gives us a feeling of security to know weve got some strong supports under us." y. 6-T0- FOOT -8 FLOCKED TOES : --- These are lovely :4&. holiday hues, drilled and -8 trees skillfully flocked foot in AT MOST AVAILABLE OF ALLIED'S LOTS 99 $'n ready for water stand. Bright red Salvation Army Christmas kettles and bell ringers will be asking for donations around the Salt Lake Valley through Dec. 24. All funds raised by the Christmas kettles will be used to provide food, toys and gifts to more than 950 families the Salvation Army assists during the holiday season. Salvation Christmas Armys kettles are an old tradition started by Captain Joseph McFee. In December of 1891 McFee decided he wanted to provide a free Christmas dinner to poor people in the area. But he didnt know how to raise funds for the food. Harkening back to his days as a sailor in Liverpool, England, McFee remembered a "Simpsons pot" on the stage landing where charitable donations were thrown in by passersy-by- . The next morning, McFee placed a similar pot at the Oakland ferry landing, at the foot of Market Street. Thus, a tradition which has spread throughout the world was started. Kettles are now used in Korea, Japan, Chile and many other European countries. Everywhere, public contributions to the kettles enable the Salvation Army to bring the spirit of Christmas to those who would otherwise be forgotten.
