Granger highs In Opener basketball team gained a split in it first two games of the boys slate, dropping visiting Granite last Wednesday 57-4but fell in the second, being, in the words of coach Ed Gray, in by Murray 76-5- 7 Tuesdays road match Murray will play next Tuesday at West Jordan and will then be host on Wednesday, December 9, to Payson with both games starting t 7:30. Granger will travel to Bingham tomorrow (Friday) and will be home against South next Tuesday. The game Tuesday was a much closer one than the final score would indicate with the Spartans after leading after one by two by and after three by 52-4But the Spartans ran away to a 24-1- 4 fourth quarter edge to account for the final 19 point advantage. Part of the fourth quarter disparity was due to the fact that the Spartans went to the line 16 times during the period. Peter Young and Todd Tuttle both had big games for the Spartans as they scored nineteen each, with Young sinking four three point shots. Doug Chapman finished 16 with and Chris Anderegg had 14. For the Granger team Travis Langpap scored 23 with Mike Maynard finished with seven. Both teams shot well from the field with Murray hitting 21x42 for 50 percent and Granger right behind with 20x42. Granger made shot only one of ten three-poiattempts while the Spartans hit 4x11 from that range. Coach Ed Gray stated "we didnt play with much intensity and they were to ready play. They outrebounded us by 10, 37-2and with our height, that just shouldnt happen." He went on to say that "the big concern for us was that we got outhustlcd. Murray played well and was Coach Hammer was delighted with the big win and stated that he "didnt think there was anyway we could beat them by that much. Our kids pushed the ball right at them from the start, and it was surprising for this early in the year that neither team had a lot of turnovers." He was especially pleased with Granger 57, Granite pre-leag- 48 7, Granger led all the way in last Wednesdays contest, starting out with a 2 first period edge. The "out-hustle- 16-1- Lancers ran that advantage to 11, 30-1- 9 at the half. Granger maintained the 1 1 point bulge through the the third quarter, despite some excellent three point shooting by the Farmers, winding Granite up the period ahead 46-3would not let the Lancers pull away in the final quarter and, in fact, cut it back a bit to nine points by the time the final horn sounded. "The kids played well for a first commented a pleased game, head coach Ed Gray, Granger "except for the 29 turnovers we had. Still, weve got a lot of kids just coming off football plus our players are used to a more control type of game instead of the running game were using now. Also, they were hustle type turnovers, showing that the kids heads are in the right place and all need is some more they experience." Granger shot 46 percent from the field, compared to 30 percent for Granite, although the Farmers did net seven three-poishots. The Lancers also had an edge at the foul line, going 9x15 or 60 percent to 9x16 or 58 percent. Granger, with its new found height, beat Granite on the boards 38-2Top scorers for the Lancers were John Thorpe with 19 points and Travis Langpap and Paul Marsh 10 each. with also Thorpe contributed 11 rebounds as did Jonas Hamlin, who added eight points. For Granite, Ken Christensen fired in 18 points, while teammate Scott Walton hit for 14. Coach Gray was also proud of his teams defense, especially its 14 steals. Seven of those were contributed by Bill Rieser. Granite wound up the first half by missing seven straight free throws then went on a scoring drought in the second half that saw them score just two points in the first 10 minutes. In a game that seemed to be divided into two separate parts Tuesday night, Alta clearly won the first 25-1but part (first hall) Cottonwoods Colts came back to take the second part (second half) 36-1and the game as well 53-3Cottonwood will now participate in the annual Laker Tournament in Ogden this weekend at Bonneville High School, where it will play Woods Cross at six oclock tomorrow (Friday) and then will play again on Saturday with the time uncertain. starting Cottonwood will play its first home game next Tuesday against highly regarded Bountiful at 7:30. In evidence of the two ball games that the fans saw, Altas lead at the half was largely due to their success at the free throw line, where they made 13x17, while Cottonwood was making 9x13. In the second half, Alta made only one of six free throws attempted while the Colts were 18x25. A total of 43 fouls were called in the contest with three Alta players fouling out and one Colt. Cottonwood, playing its first game, and Alta playing its second, both played ragged basketball in the first half with 22 of the total 42 points coming from the stripe and only ten field goals being made, four by the Colts and six by the Hawks. The Hawks took a 12-- 7 lead at the quarter, helped by perfect six for six foul shooting and increased the lead at the half to eight and it looked like Cottonwood was in big trouble with starting guard Travis Warner having four fouls, and Brad Sorensen and Shane Henschen both having three. But turned into adversity advantage in the third quarter when Cottonwood went with its tall team to protect the foul plagued Warner, and this quintet, with one 67 player, one 66 player, one 64 player and two 63 players, completely dominated the boards. Alta could generally get one shot and Cottonwood would own the ball. Shane Henschen, who went 5x6 at the line and added one bucket and Brad for seven points, Sorensen with two baskets and a free throw, led the third quarter charge which saw the Colts finally get even for the first time since the 8, 4. moments. Henschen, opening the after a for basket driving rebound and fine lead pass by Sorensen, was fouled and the one of two free shots tied it aL 33. Henschen then put his team up by two in the opening moments of the last canto, but a basket by the Hawks Spencer Mciklc tied it again at 35. But five of seven free throw shooting by Jerry Martineau, Sorensen and Chad Fletcher gave the Colts a 40-3- 5 lead. Rhctt Marshall then made the only of the game to bring the score within two, but the Colts, showing good accuracy at the stripe and forcing Alta to foul to catch up, pulled away to the final margin. Martineau led the Colts in scoring with Sorensen had 10, 14, Henschen and Fletcher each had nine, and the Colts after being outrebounded in the first half, won the battle of the boards 36-3Scan Lindquist and Spencer Mcikle both had ten points for the with Rhctt Marshall Hawks, scoring eight and Shcm Vandcr Veur six. Coach Blair Martineau was pleased with the comeback that his team made but said that it was one of the overall poorest performances during his stint at Cottonwood. However he was pleased with the steady play during the game of Fletcher, Martineau, and the 64 Kloke, only a sophomore. He felt that there was too much individual play by his team in the first half but that the employment of the 3 zone in the second half was instrumental in shutting down the Hawks. Alta coach Ron Carling said that "once again we played well for three quarters but not in the fourth. A lot of fouls were called in the second half with a big difference being Cottonwoods making 27x38 from the line while we made 14x22. three-point- er 3. free-thro- another had three-pointand four Bulldogs scored in the period. The first four minutes of the third period were a disaster for Judge, generally a good third quarter team. Judge went scoreless while Pleasant Grove, led by 4 Craig dozen a scored Hayden unanswered points. Hayden, last years high jump champ with a 6-- 9 leap, proved he could jump under the basket too, scoring eight of those 12. Judge finally got on the board when Micah Peters hit a basket and four points by Chris Jones and another Peters bucket gave Judge an eight-poirun, but PG hung on at the end of the and lead 45-4- 2 period. Soto half. w er 9. 6-- Judge will next be in action tomorrow (Friday) in its third straight home game, entertaining Cyprus at 7:30. The Bulldogs will take to the road Tuesday at Hillcrest. Judge took an early lead against Pleasant Grove when Jimmy Solo sank a three-pointwith less than a minute played. Judge led 3 after one period as Soto sank another homer and Chuck Miller came off the bench to score five. The second period was a good defensive one, but six PG charity tosses helped the highly touted 28-2- 6 at the Vikings pull within nt er The first six minutes of the final period were a repeat as PG ran out 7 to a edge, but Soto hit 17-1- 54-4- and Chris another three-pointGardner had a bucket while the Vikes were missing five free throws and suddenly it was a two-poigame. Jones made it 54-5- 3 with a free throw and after a PG basket, Soto tied it with er nt another bomb, his seventh of the game, but with 12 seconds left PG hit a pair of free throws and Judges last shot fell off the rim. The Saturday game saw both teams stay close throughout, although Judge had a edge at one point during the third period. Davis came back to lead 1 at the half, however. Davis was able to maintain that edge during the second half, expanding it to six with two minutes to go as Emery and Olsen had 20 points each. Judge tried, but could not catch up. was Yerkovich Jim Coach pleased with the overall play of his team, although he felt the offensive movement was poor and was concerned over the shooting, felling that by being merely average, the team would have won both games. Peters had in each game. 13 rebounds Gardner led scoring in the second with 18 on 6x12 from regular range and 2x3 from the three-poiarea. Solo scored 17 and Jones 15 on a 6x8 effort. Friday Soto scored 23 on 7x9 from three-poirange. MURRAY. Coach shots. Chapman played only 17 minutes and scored 17 points. The rest of the scoring was evenly distributed. Friday against Millard, Murray jumped out to a big 19-- 8 lead at the end of the first period, but went as cold as it had been hot and scored only eight points in the second quarter. They could not climb out of the hole, partly because of shooting 7x21 from the charity stripe while Millard was hitting 17x24, coach Hammer said. Randy Gchl had a good game both and offensively defensively, scoring 21. In Saturdays game Murray ran away from the Nevada club which had lost in overtime to Cedar City the night before. Hammer said his players played extremely well in the second half as evidenced by the fact that Boulder Cily did not even attempt a free throw during the second half. The Spartans were up by 15 when Hammer cleared his bench. The 6-- 6 Chapman scored 20 points in 21 minutes. Chris Anderegg contributed 15 and Gchl and Tuttle both added 10. Chapman was named to the team and Hammer expects his foul problems, created in part by aggressive play on the offensive boards, will be corrected as time goes by. 6-- In the opening moments of the third period Chapman drove the baseline for a slam dunk to give his team a 38-3- 0 lead, but was foul for his fourth whistled moments later.
