Nicponski assured the group that Hercules would not allow that to happen - "Bacchus West stays in unincorporated Salt Lake County as long as there is an unincorporated Salt Lake County. Town council board members and residents asked many questions of Nicponski about the proposal, but appeared satisfied, if not pleased with the responses. In fact, by the time the Hercules presentation was concluding, one board member went so far as to describe county commissioners as "Larry, Curly and Mo. He said that Nupetco believes it can legally get control of the property this winter and could move the tires this spring. Terms which have surfaced in council meetings to describe the condition of the properatrocious ty include appalling, and a garbage dump. Petty said the Nupetco doesn't want to bring more tires in. Instead, negotiations are being conducted with Kennecott to heat and vaporize the tires in Kennecott smelters. Another possible recycling method to get rid of the tires involves freezing them at extremely cold temper- - tures and reducing the rubber to powder. Councilwoman Janice Fisher asked, "If Nupetco has been the owner all along, why haven't they been able to control their tenant? Fisher noted that 7200 West, the westernmost boundary of West Valley City, and is "a gateway to the city predicted that granting the appeal could mean that "from now and forevermore amen were going to have thousands of tires stored down there. vote The coucil deadlocked in a on a motion to deny the appeal. Books Continued from page 1 and science. Appropriations to school libraries is also funded under textbooks and supplies. But Murray high media coordinator Art Allgaier said they have fared better. The only thing that has reduced the number of books I buy is the cost he said. of a book itself, My budget hasnt been decreased, but Im buying fewer books. Allgaier has also reduced the number of periodicals. The library receives because of hiked prices. But in the future, school libraries will face more serious problems, Allgaier said. And they will be in the form of equipment. I have a copy machine that is so slow its ridiculous, he said. But I cant get a new one because of the budget. Even more serious is the format change in educational material. Tape rather than film is becoming much more popular. And stagnant budgets mean no VCRs, which means no new educational materials, Allgaier said. We are a day late and a dollar short as far as technology goes. Granite, Jordan and Murray school districts usually appropriate similar amounts for similar funds. But in the case of textbooks and supplies there is a wide diversity. Unexpectedly, Murray district comes out on top. Under textbooks, Murray district appropriates $15.61 for each elementary student, while both junior and senior high students get $22.13. There is no appropriation for kindergarteners. For each elementary and junior high student the district gives school libraries $4.95, while $4.75 is spent for each high school pupil. Murray district $21.45 in instructional appropriates supplies for while students, junior elementary high scholars get $23.02 and high school students get $24.11. Even though Murray appropriates more for textbooks and supplies than districts, neighboring THANK YOU We would like to thank you for participating in our voluntary pay program. Marketing Michele Bartmess, Editor Ethel Bradford, Editor Karen Egli, Circulation Jan Brown, Business - 5 p.m. Superintendent Ron Stephens said there are still problems with outdated books and low library budgets. While Jordan allocates more to school libraries, the district still falls behind Murray in textbooks and instructional supplies. Five dollars is allotted to the library for each kindergarten through sixth grade student. For seventh and eighth grade students $6 is appropriated while $8 is spent for ninth through 12th graders. Under textbooks Jordan spends $10.50 on elementary students, while $13 is spent or. both middle school and senior high pupils. The district also sets aside $5.50 for kindergart-ners- . Jordan is more comparable to Murray in the instructional supply area. Elementary students receive $18, while middle school students get $23.25 and high school students get $29.25. To help soive the problem Jordan has resorted to asking teachers to supplement old textbooks, according to Assistant Superintendent Marlin Fairbourn. In the case of supplies, the district now uses standardized forms, a lower grade paper, but a more expensive printer. Although the higher quality printer is more expensive, it actually saves money because everything is readable, he said. Granite districts appropriations for textbooks and supplies are in the most serious shape. The allocations are so low board members recently decided to make funding textbooks and instructional supplies a high priority. Under textbooks the district allocates $11 for kindergarten through sixth grade. Seventh and eighth graders receive $12.50, while ninth through 12th get $10.50. The school libraries receive $2.62 for kindergarten through sixth grade, while $2.75 is allocated for seventh and eighth grade. For ninth through twelfth grade $2.85 is set aside. Instruction supplies is an area where Granite spents almost half as much compared to Jordan and Murray. For each kindergarten through sixth grade student $11 is apSeventh and eighth propriated. graders receive $8.50, and ninth through twelfth graders get $10.25. We cannot keep up with the turnover of curricular guidelines, said Assistant Superintendent Riley O'Neil. ...We are trying in all instances to keep textbooks up to date, but I know we are using books that are older than eight years old. But ONeil added, if new books were used Im not sure test scores would improve. Stephens on the other hand believes there is a direct relationship between the textbooks used, the availability of supplies and learning. 0)99 41 SAVE Entire Stock Split Leather Jackets Sensational value!
