After running up 28-halftime advantage in Fri0 Orems football day's 4A semi-finacrew may have thought it had G ranger dead to rights. But somebody forgot to tell the intended corpse. Granger, reborn for the ashes with e a timely and perfectly executed kick to start the second half, went on to run the string as far as it could, the end coming, unfortunately, six points short, You just cant let good teams like Orem run up a 28-- score on you, noted Lancer head Mike Fraser l. on-sid- 35-2- 0 later. There were three more kicks, passes for two points out of kick formation and fourth down gambles for big yardage. Granger played with the same confidence that brought it back against top opposition in league play and earned it a region title. The end came with 39 seconds left on the clock, as Orem, knowing the Lancers, devoid of time outs, had to throw, picked off a pass then calmly ran out the clock It's hard to come from so far back and get so close only to fall short, Fraser commented. But I think, in time, these kids will put this game in perspective. Early on. according to Fraser, the on-sid- l outscored Orem by the incredible speed of the Orem squad. Quarterback Ed Chatterly display some that speed on a seven-yartouchdown run that capped the Tigers first possession. Chatterly then showed that he could also pass moments later. After the Tigers recovered a Lancer fumble at the Granger 35, he immediately fired a touchdown pass to Tyler Anderson. Still in the first quarter, Brian Rowly, another Tiger scat-bacscormade it 21-- 0 with an eight-yar- d ing burst. Midway through the second period, notched its fourth six pointer, as Chatterfly managed to shove his way into the end zone on a d sneak. We were pretty well shellshocked at that point, Fraser recalled. But, before we talked to the players, we got together as coaches and decided that yeiling at the kids just wasnt appropriate. We simply reminded them that they were a good football team, a team that had come from behind before. The Lancers took their coaches admonition to heart and the results were immediate. Craig VanWorkam sent a perfect, bounding, rolling kick down the side line and Steve Hammer gathered it in. Granger seemed to have Orem bottled up on a play, but Chatterly broke loose again for the first down. He then passed for the Tigers final touch, making the score The two team then traded fumbles midway through the fourth quarter, but Granger definitely got the better of it as Rieser ran it back for 47 yards and six points.
