Participants from 25 bands across Utah, Colorado, Idaho and Nevada will flood the University of Utah campus for the annual Western States High School Marching Band Competition today (Thursday) through Saturday. From the Green Sheet area participants are Granger, Murray and West Jordan. A separate but integrated feature this year will be a dance workshop, together with an imported instructor to teach it, said Gregg I. Hanson, director of bands of the UofU. Widely considered as the unofficial state finals for marc' mg band competition in Utah, the three-daevent begins with preliminary band competition in Rice Stadium Thursday at 6:30 pm More prelims are scheduled for Friday at 7 p m., with final competition booked for Saturday also at 7 p.m., Prof. Hanson said. Guest instructor for the dance workshop will be Betty Atchison, currently the entertainment assistant choreographer at Walt Disney World and a widely known performer and clinician. Adjudicators for the competition include Joseph Christensen, Iowa State University; Wayne Downey, Concord Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps; Tim Salzman, University of Washington; Jeff Fiedler. Cavalier Drum and Bugle Corps, David Atchison, Walt Disney World; Tom Float, Concord D&B Corps and Mrs. Atchison. The Dance Workshop will operate under a somewhat different time schedule, Prof. Hanson said, Friday from 3 to 5 p m and Saturday from 9 to 11 am. Tickets, available at the stadium ticket booth, will cost $2.50 for the preliminary shows and $3.50 for the finals. All three shows are available on a special ticket for $7. First grade students at Whittier elementary created vegetable animals and people as part of their study of autumn last week. Teachers LaRue Richmond and Peggy Eaton asked students to make things using items found in yards and gardens. The results included animals, dinosaurs, witches and other imaginative things made from a variety of weeds, flowers, vegetable--; and fruits, said a school spokesman. Officer Dale Ann Wright, from West Valley City Police Department, visited the school Monday to swear in members of the safety patrol and discuss the McGruff home safety program in an assembly.
