Show 1 M THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, May 14, 1987 Howard Hausknecht Reaches 90th Birthday Howard Hausknecht will celebrate, with his family, his 90th birthday on May 15th, 1987. The honored man was born in Pueblo, Colorado and came to Mur- ray with his parents, at age two. His father was first, and chief assayer, at the Murray Smelter, Howard attended Arlington If' - 1 ambulances used today. From 1940 to 1962 he taught machine shop, welding and auto mechanics, as well as directing school transportation at Bingham high, from where he also retired. He recalls with pride that he taught as many as 60 students at the same time and attributes his success to good organization, where he appointed the students themselves as shop foremen, foremen, tool room foremen and janitors He also stressed cleanliness, strict discipline, fairness and practical knowledge of his subjects In his classes, if machine shop equipment was broken, he or a student made the repairs, and never expected someone else to do his job He says that he can count on one hand the number of hand tools that w ere lost or stolen from his Bingham high shop during the 22 years of teaching there Howard married Ruby Townsend of Murray in 1925. She died in 1984, but they became the parents of Howard T of the Cottonwood area; Stephen E , Holladay and Jeanne Engberson of Alpine, Utah He enjoys extremely good health and maintains an immaculate yard and garden at his Midvale home, just the same as his dear wife, Ruby, did 1915, was struggling with its vocational education department and, in 1923 School Supt C E Gaufin asked Howard to give high school teaching a try He did, and for the next 17 years elementary through grade eight and then attended Granite high, 1913 17 He was an outstanding athlete, playing on the basketball and baseball teams all four years there From 1917 to 1918 he served in the army during World War I and from 1920-2he attended Michigan State Automotive school, then returning to Murray to set up his own automotive repair shop At this time, however, Murray high which had been completed in taught auto mechanics and machine becoming an extremely effective and outstanding teacher Most of the hand tools used during his tenure at Murray high were supplied bj Howard himself At the same time he was a volunteer assistant coach for basketball and baseball and, along with others, transported all the athletic teams in their personal cars to play their games He never missed a Muriay high basketball game dur, ing this time Howard gained an outstanding reputation as a teacher arid strict disciplinarian, which many of his students came to appreciate in their later ears, as evidenced by the has many letters of appreciation-hreceived Aw are .of the many needs of the growing city of Murray, Howard was a volunteer fireman at this time and, in 1936 he remodeled a 1936 Ford panel tiuck into a combination Chief car and ambulance He believes this was the forerunner of the fire departments rescue and 1 shop techniques, 1897- - 1987 e 1936 . . .
