Show THE GREEN SHEET 9, 1987 Thursday, April AS WE SEE IT Michael J. Fox Is A Winner With Old And Young by Mark Cartwright Green Sheet Entertainment Critic SEEN THE SCREEN DEPT.: Is it possible for Michael J. Fox to ON appear in a flop? Well, lets review his track record. Family Ties hasnt been out of the top five rated television shows this season and, more often than not, is rated number two behind Cosby. Back To The Future was a monstrous hit at the box office and in video, as was Teen Wolf, which was originally thought to be a film which would ride on BTTFs coattails, but proved to have strong legs of its own. The Secret of My Success, which opens tomorrow (Friday), stars Michael J. Fox in a fast and furious comedy which should appeal to all ages. Fox plays Brantley Foster who, with a job offer in hand, leaves his family and the farm in rural America for New York City, only to find upon arrival that the company has made severe cutbacks in its work force, so hes out of a job on his first day (shades of the CBS news department). Unwilling to give up, he applies all over town, only to find that he is either over qualified, under qualified or not a minority. When he left the farm, his mother gave him the telephone number and City Rep address of a distant relative who a corporation based in the Big Apple and, in a last ditch effort to find a job, goes to his uncle who promptly puts him to work in the mailroom. What a great guy, huh? Without giving too much away, lets just say that the mailroom isnt his bag and within two weeks he manages to secure an office, a secretary and an aunt with the hots for him, all without anyones authorization and while hes still assigned to the mailroom. He also manages to fall for a woman executive (Helen Slater) who is all business and not interested in his advances. Fox plays his role with a flair, sometimes understated, which makes each of the situations he gets into that much funnier, keeping the audience not only laughing all the way, but wondering what could possibly happen to him next. It takes owns multi-nation- a certain kind of talent to pull off a film like this and Michael J. Fox is more than qualified for the role which allows him to appeal to adults and teens alike. The Secret of My Success, a Universal release reviewed at Plitts Trolley Corners, is a lot of fun and answers our initial question. No, Michael J. Fox cant make a bad movie, which is good for all of us. Put this one on your must see list. Another comedy which should go must see list is Police Academy 4: Citizens On Patrol, reviewed at Manns Plaza 6. Its a continuation of the Police Academy series which has become a proven winner with comedy lovers. on the Tackleberry, Mahoney, Hightower, Hooks, Sweetchuck, Zed and the rest of the crazies are back to help Commandant Lassard (George Gaynes) put together neighborhood watch groups to help citizens and to aid the police in spotting criminal activity in their areas. Its Lassards major pet project which he wants to see implemented before his upcoming retirement. As fate would have it, once Lassard has recruited the citizens from all walks of life (young, old, slightly nuts and even borderline criminals) and started to have them trained at the Academy, hes called away and his old nemesis, Captain Harris (G. W. Bailey) is placed in charge. Harris is one of those who feel that police work should be left to the cops and is determined to undermine the project. Anyone familiar with the series knows that the situations and slapstick sort of humor is always brilliantly done, thanks to a great cast which includes Steve Michael Winslow, Bubba Smith, David Graf, Tim Kazurinsky and Bobcat Goldthwait. During an interview with Paul Maslansky, who has been the creative force and producer of all of the Police Academy films, there will be a Police Academy 5 and, while there may be some cast changes, it will continue cracking up audiences all over the world. Thats good news for us and so is Police Academy 4: Citizens On Patrol, which is a sure winner. won for his performance in Hoosiers instead of Michael Caine, Newcomer Mary Eiiabeth Mastrontonio should have been recognized for her work in The Color of Money and Paul Hogan, Ken Shadie and John Cornell should have received awards for best original screenplay, which should have been Crocodile Dundee. The dinner and auction was a tremendous success, under the direction and hard work of Glenda Solomon, and Mike Runge ol KLUB radio was a great host and auctioneer. Among the many people who should be thanked are Kings Row Formal Wear (who made me look as good as Im ever gonna get American Airlines, Mann, Century 5 and Plitt theatres, and all of the studios and video companies w ho only needed one phone call to participate. Goes to show that the people in the entertainment industry have a lot of heart. g, LAST WORDS THE OSCARS ON DEPT.: While attending the Oscar night dinner at the Fort Douglas Country Club, which was a charity event sponsored by Variety Club with the proreeds going to Camp Kostopulos, several thoughts came to mind as the awards were given out on the big screen TV provided by Video in the , round. As always, the Oscarcast was too long, Marlee Matlin (who everyone was happy to see win Best Actress) looked like a defective Christmas tree, Dennis Hooper should have HEARD ON THE STREET DEPT.: Mick Jagger and David Bowie are said to be working on a film project, - right into the action. But, when appropriate, they moved those sets of stairs so smoothly, so effortlessly, that actors moving up them were met at exactly the right moment by the next level. One arrangement gave us the streets of London, another Fagins den, yet another the Brownlow home. The adroit handling of that movable set speeded up the action so that one scene flowed effortlessly into the next, with no breaks by Olga Milius SALT LAKE. Using a set as fascinating as the show itself, Cit Rep chalked up another success last week with a lively production of Oliver. The opening night audience was greeted with a set so starkly functional it was almost surrealistic. Brook Horman was delightful in the title role, backed by a chorus of about twelve youngsters who made the most of every number, aided by choreography suited to boyish movement. Max Robinson was Fagin to the life, a conniving, sly, scheming yet and gave a likable old stand out rendition of Reviewing The Situation His antics captured the audience from the first Duane Stephens and Marlene Brinkerhoff were audience favorites as Mr. Bumble and Mrs. Corney, and their I Shall Scream was a crow'd pleaser. Jennifer O'Haley is always popular with City Rep audiences and was a lovely Nancy. Her beautiful voice and acting ability always add to a show, and her performance of As Long As He Needs Me w'as a highlight of this production. The choreography, by Marilyn Montgomery, was lively and appropriate, and once again the City Rep cast showed they know how to dance. The production numbers were well Who Will done, highlighted by w'hich combined song and Buy? dance in a fine mix, and Consider Yourself. It is often the bits; of choreography, the little touches in every scene that make or break a musical, and in this show there was no problem. The director and choreographer blended just the right mix of movement to bring out every scene. Other standout performances came from Troy Lunt as the Artful Dodger, and from Steven Patrick Safer as a frightening Bill Sikes. His manhandling of Nancy, (who was probably black and blue by the end of the run) brought gasps from the audience, and his plunge from the topmost level when shot must have jarred every bone in his body. There were a few problems with sound on opening night, but they were resolved by the end of the first act. The City Rep orchestra under Richard Chatelain gave good support to a well- - rounded cast. City Rep has established itself as an important part of the Salt Lake theater scene. added to its growing Oliver reputation.
