Show Thursday, March THE GREEN SHEET 8 A $250 Million 26, 1987 Corporate Investment By Hercules - Massive Bacchus West Operation Focuses On Space by Ted Olsen Hercules, Inc. BACCHUS. Upon seeing the massive scale of the Bacchus West complex of 29 buildings interconnected by enclosing tramways and spread ovei more the 4,000 acres in the Oquirrh foothills, it is hard to imagine how such a huge project could have been completed and made operational in under two years. What it took was a $250 million corporate investment by Hercules Incorporated and lots of hard work. The creation and design of Bacchus West resulted from decades of experience in manufacturing solid rocket motors for NASA and the Armed Forces, plus an infusion of revolutionary thinking on development of a totally automated rocket motor plant, the first of its kind in the aerospace industry. In the past 23 months, about 2,000,000 cubic yards (or 154,000 truckloads) of earth were moved; 37,000 yards of concrete have been poured; and 2,000 tons of reinforced steel have been tied in the construction of the 29 buildings and attached haulageways that make up the insolid itial phase of this rocket propulsion facility. Inside the complex, some 18 miles of pipe and 63 miles of conduit have been installed to control and humidity, illuminate work areas and monitor product quality. The plants control center houses advanced computers, manned by a staff or nine technicians per shift, as well as a closed circuit television network and special systems to ensure an uninterrupted power supply. In all, some 3,600 instruments are involved in the control of various operations conducted at the plant. temperature CASTING COMPLEX pits, this , Hercules solid propoulsion systems have been deployed on more than 400,000 tactical missiles and are part of every solid propellant ballistic missile in the U.S. arsenal. Moreover, Hercules is the nations largest manufacturer and foremost user of graphite fiber, developing materials and structures Containing four casting wide building is 60-fo- for aircraft, missile and space applications. Through its Simmonds Precision subsidiary, the company provides most of the free world's aircraft with electronic subsystems and components for fuel measurement, engine ignition and flight control. Hercules Aerospace also designs and manufactures electronic defense systems and is a leading producer of powders and high energy propellants for ordnance, ranging from small arms to the largest field artillery. The TV system provides uninterrupted vigilance via 21 color and 10 black and white cameras linked through an advanced fiber optics cable network. The visual information is displayed on nine control room monitors where operators can closely examine each production operation by instructing the cameras to pan, tilt or zoom-i- n for a detailed inspection. In addition to this continuous surveillance of the production process, the TV system also records and stores all activities in a bank of 28 VCRs. This enables Bacchus West supervisory technicians to establish a case history of every operation in the plant. Such around the clock visual supervision and recording is yet another example of applying the latest technology through Bacchus West, making this $250 million plant the safest, most efficient and most economical solid rocket motor manufacturing facility in the aerospace industry today. Future Needs labor-intensiv- dient handling, feeding transportation as and well as propellant As the most advanced solid rocket motor manufacturing facility in the aerospace industry, Bacchus West offers the capability and the capacity to meet the current and future needs of national defense and space exploration programs. 1,800-gallo- ed remote controlled, it The $250 million facility, funded entirely from corporate capital, is now operational and ready to produce large numbers of Trident IIs, as well as solid rocket boosters for the Delta 2 medium launch vehicle fully automated solid rocket manufacturing facility in the industry. Every crucial operation is monitored and controlled by computers, manned by a staff per shift. As the largest manufacturer of graphite fibers in the United States and operator of the worlds largest filament winding facility, Hercules also brings its expertise in lightweight rocket case construction to Bacchus West. In fact, all Trident II and Delta 2 boosters manufactured by Hercules will have graphite nine-perso- n fiber filament on-du- e and potentially the hazardous steps involved in the manufacture of large solid rocket motors. While Automated Ground Vehicles (AGVs) transport propellant ingredients throughout the Bacchus West complex, the CCTV network provides coverage of all crucial operations, including ingre- and the Space Shuttle program. This capacity is unmatched throughout the aerospace industry. Every aspect of Bacchus West is devoted to large rocket motor production. No other propulsion plant has the ability to mix 26,000 pounds n of propellant in J.H. Day mixers. Whats more, Bacchus Wests cast and cure complex contains four of the largest casting pits in the country, each measuring more than 21 feet in diameter and over 50 feet in depth. Over the past 20 years, Hercules Bacchus Works has maintained the best record in the aerospace and explosives industry, one that far outpaces general industry in safety performance. The concern and effort on the part of management and employees alike has been carried over into every aspect of Bacchus West, the first and only fully automated solid rocket motor manufacturing facility in the world. Postal Service WEST VALLEY. New facilities the big news at and new hours are area post offices. It is growth that has created a need for more new post offices in the southern end of the valley than in any other area of the state. One of the first new post offices to open was the Murray branch of the Salt Lake City Post Office. It moved from its old location on 53rd South near the fairgrounds to its new location at 4989 So. State St. in 1984. It was one of the first passive solar post offices in the country. Last year, new offices were opened in both Kearns and West Valley. The Kearns office moved in October, moving from 5361 So. 4220 West to West Valleys new post office opened in November at 3490 So. 4400 West, vacating its old 5495 So. 4015 West. location at 3549 So. 3600 West. Both of the old offices had been extremely overcrowded. Cottonwood is the next area that will get a new post office. A site has been selected on 23rd East just north of 70th South and construction should start late this summer or early fall. A move in date of late 1988 is hoped for. A South End branch to serve residents in ZIP Code 84123 is in the works. The site should be selected in April. The area being looked at is bounded on the north by 40th South, on the south by 50th South, on the east by Interstate 15 and on the West by Redwood Road. A site should also be selected in April for the new Alta Canyon Sta- tion, which will serve Sandy residents in ZIP Code 84092, as well as for a new Magna Post Office. A new site is in the works for the Midvale area, with site selection hopefully being made this spring. Draper residents should also get a new post office.
