Show Thursday, March THE GREEN SHEET 26, 1987 AS WE SEE IT r Solid 'Gold' Team Steals The Show In 'Burglar' by Mark Cartwright Green Sheet Entertainment Critic SEEN ON THE SCREEN DEPT.: Whoopi Goldberg and Bob Goldthwait are a solid gold team in Warner Bros, latest release Burglar. Goldberg is Bernie Rhodenbarr, an trying to go straight by running a book store in San Francisco, which just happens to be next door to a dog grooming concern run by her Carl friend, Heifer (Goldthwait). By night Bernie is a very slick burglar, forced to commit the crimes by an ex cop who wants a fur coat for his wife and $20,000 cash. Bernies last caper, stealing a dentists jewelry back from the dentists goes awry when the now swinging bachelor is murdered while Bernie is in the apartment. When the police go to the -- ex-wif- e, she tells them that Bernie hears her talking about the jewels which effectively puts the cops on Bernies trail and leaves Bernie no alternative but to solve the case before the cops catch her. Whoopi Goldberg has a way of playing her character in an understated fashion, which makes her comedic delivery really pay off. In this, her third film, she has managed to create an entirely different character than those seen in The Color Purple and Jumping Jack Flash. Goldberg is as creative as she is talented. Bob Goldthwait turns in a fine performance, especially in the bar scene where he really lets his comedy talent shine. He sticks with the character that has made him so popular as the screwball in Police Academy 2 and 3, and soon to be 11 12 13 14 IS 16 IT 16 19 THE NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE CROSSWORD PUZZLE City Slickers BY GLORIA EVANSPuzzles Edited by Eugene T. Preston was admired by his peers for his talent and professionalism. When Cary Grant was offered the film role of Harold Hill (created by Preston on Broadway), Grant told Jack Warner that he not only wouldnt take the role, but if Preston didnt do it, he wouldnt even go see the movie. The late Richard Burton, upon being told that all great actors came from England, said that was nonsense and mentioned that great American actor Robert Preston. It is truly unfortunate that many of Prestons roles were only seen on the Broadway stage. However, there are enough of his film roles available to continue to entertain us. On top of all this, he was a gentleman, too. HEARD ON THE STREET DEPT.: Dweezil Zappa (Franks son) will turn up in Arnold Schwartzneggers summer release Running Man. which also boasts Richard Dawson of Family Feud fame as a game show host. If you think Dweezil is a strange name, remember that his sister is Moon Unit Zappa. No, this is not a joke, Frank actually gave his kids those names, although nobody knows why. Mickey ( Year Of The Dragon) Rourke really wants to play Legs Diamond in the film Legs, which has been in the planning stages for some time and may get off the ground yet. Cher, soon to be seen in The Witches OfEastwick, has dropped out of Fatal Beauty so Whoopi Goldberg will now play the Dirty Harry-typ- e character. Isnt she one of the workingest actresses around? If Ivan Reitman of Goldbusters fame has his way, well see Chevy-Chasas the star of Memoirs Of An Invisable Man. So far, Chevy hasnt said yes or no, but hes thinking about it and Ivan can be persuasive. It. A Reporter. Seems that when Joan Rivers reported for work the other day, she was advised that her producer had been fired. That didnt sit too well with Joan, but they also advised her that her executive producer had to go too, which really made the fur fly since her executive producer is also her husband Edgar. Joan was so steamed that she went home leaving Fox to run one of her previous shows and the audience asking, Wheres Joanie? You may remember that As We See It said several weeks ago that some changes needed to be made in the way Joan handled her looking for a good com- previous editions been have hysterical and there is no reason why this one should be any different. Another comedy which is worth a look is The Charmings (Fridays 7 p.m. on KTVX), which has Prince Charming and his wife Snow White living in a small town, circa 1987. They have two kids, a dwarf and Snows living with them step-moth- and the opening episode showed great promise. The show is fast paced, loaded with pot shots at the evil and the situations created by this family living in modern America are very funny. Check it out. step-moth- show. Its a horror story with a romantic line running through it and while some may feel it is too gory, it is an excellent, intelligently made film which will entertain fans of the genre. A great example of why coloriza-tiois valuable to old black and white films is Captain Blood, also If you have released by CBS-Foanyone in the house who wont w atch a black and white film, stop by the video store and pick up this colorized video starring Errol Flynn in a real classic. Sean Connery, as a Franciscan detective trying to solve a murder in a 14th century monastery, turns in a great performance in The Same 01 The Rose from Embassy Home x n Entertainment. K.
