Taylorsville highs baseball crew looked very the region wrecking crew everybody expected it to be in demolishing Granite 17-- in Tuesdays league opener for both teams. Looking to make it the Warriors will visit Olympus tomorrow Friday) at 3:30 p.m. then host Cyprus on Tuesday. Granite entertains Cottonwood tomorrow and travels to Olympus Tuesday, again both games starting at 3:30. Taylorsville pounded out 18 hits against the Granite pitching staff, sparking a four run first inning. Once started, the Warriors just rolled on. adding four more runs in each of the second and third innings and five in the fifth. Heavy hitters for Taylorsville included Mark Tolbert 3x3, Scott Peterson 3x3 with two doubles and a triple, Steve Woolley 2x3 with a double, Kevin Quinn 2x2 with a double, Mike Brown 2x2, Troy Leavitt 2x4 with a double, Dave Littlewood 2x2 with a triple and Leon Facer with a two-ruhomer in the fourth. Tolbert was the winning pitcher for Taylorsville, with Littlewood coming on in relief in the fifth. Between them, they game up only two hits to Granite. Granite's only run was scored in the bottom of the fifth, when Kyle N ielson walked, moved to second on 1 ( an error and scored on single by Jason Done. Granite really has a pretty good commented Taylorsville team, coach Ron Rushton, but we got it going and didnt slow down. It was just one of those things. Of course, Rushton was pleased with the performance of senior pitcher, first baseman and hitter the WarTolbert, who riors along with shortstop second baseman Mark Roberts. Other seniors on the squad include Leavitt at third, Littlewood at pitch and outfield and Facer in left field. Rushton has three catchers, juniors Scott Peterson and Dan Sluga and sophomore Guy Mackay. Sluga is also going to see some play in right field. Some of those others that will be throwing to them are juniors Brad Wood, Quinn and Troy Peterson and sophomores Jeff Leatherwood and Barr Hill. Petersen will also be spending some time in centerfield, while Hill will also be playing in right. Other players expected to She a lot of action are first basemen junior Steve Woolley and sophomore Simon Gustafson; Quinn at second along with sophomores Shane Lyon and Brad Wood; junior Ron Taggart splitting time with Leavitt at third; n Chad Christensen junior and sophomore Bill Vanry at short; and Lancers Rip Colts In Baseball Play SOUTH COTTONWOOD. baseball coach Chuck Cleggs Colts opened their league schedule against Granger here on Tuesday with a 14-- 3 loss. Granger pounded out 13 hits to the Colts six and jumped out to a big 0 lead in the first inning. Hicks, Hawes, West and Helm all pitched Granger-Cottonwoo- d 8-- for Cottonwood Jake with Shewmake pitching for Granger. loss The Colts, who suffered a to Alta in a game last Friday, will now play at Granite on Friday and will play at Skyline next Tuesday. Both games are at 3:30. Granger will play at Skyline on Friday and at home against Kearns on Tuesday. Coach Clegg said that his team is composed of 17 at present and he feels that he will have good senior pitching although none of them has had high school experience. John Harris and Bob Helm, both seniors, are the of the team and Coach Clegg says he will rely on both offensively and defensively. Seniors on the team are John Harris, Boh Helm, Justin Hawes, Matt HicksKenny Jewell, Dean Schmidt, and Doug McClure. Juniors are Marvin Acey, Brad Sorensen, Chad Fletcher, Chad Fish, and Greg West. Sophomores include Greg Carroll, 10-- 2 pre-seaso- n RATIONAL- Jeff Casper, Aubrey Matthews, Tony Thomas, and Ray Strong. Coach Clegg is being assisted by Jim Pike, who played for the team in 1983 and 1984. In Tuesdays game, Grangers eight run first was sparked by a three-ruhomer from Trevor n Sugdin. The Lancers added two runs in each of the second, fourth and fifth innings. Sugdin finished 2x4 at the plate with four rbis, while Rich Fratto had two hits, Steve Embley went 2x2 before withdrawing with an injury, Richard Hickman stroked a double and Kelly Peterson added two hits. Shewmake, a junior on the Lancer pitching staff, worked six innings and gave up just four hits. Granger head coach Ron Folster noted that he has a number of returning starters on this years squad including Peterson, pitch and third base; Embley, center field; Fratto, catching; Scott Dalton, second; Tracy Greenwood shortstop; and Mike Harmon, first; all seniors. Experienced juniors include Jonas Hamblin at short and Hickman at first. Kearns will now travel to Cyprus for a game tomorrow (Friday) and will travel to Granger for a game next Tuesday. All games in the Region are at 3: 30. Coach Larry Hatch is assisted this year by Guy Brown and his team is composed of 26 players. Seniors are John Brown, Lonnie Anderson, Todd Funderburk, Glen Dunyon, Daren Bills, Jerry Smith, Mike Peterson, and Monte Perea. Olympus, coached by Marc Lyons, scored one run in the top of the third on singles by Stonebreaker and Davis, and a run batted in by Burton. The other run was scored on a double by Bryan Seagle and a single by Allan White in the fifth. Olympus will host Taylorsville on Friday at 3:30 and will then host Granite on Tuesday. Murray Baseball Opens With Win Siebenbergs Murray high Spartans n with a 13-- 4 opened their win over Ben Lomond on the home field at Ken Price Park on Monday. Coach Siebenberg was especially pleased with the pitching of Chad Forrest, Doug Chapman, and Cheyenne Wingett, who held the Ben Lomond team to only five hits. Senior catcher Rion Thomas was the big gun offensively as he hit 4x4 and also scored four runs. Murray will play at Ogden on Friday and then will be home against Highland on Monday and on Wednes day against East. All home games are at 3:30 and are played at Ken Price Park. Coach Siebenberg has seven seniors, 5 juniors and 2 sophomores on his roster. The seniors are n Brent Bailey, Rion Thomas, Cheyenne Winget, Justin White, Scott Kessler, Brett Bringhurst, Reggie Clark. Plans are for the team to play at least one game a week during their league play at the new Cottonwood facility, according to Dave Wathen, coach. The opening Region 3 game of the year saw the Kearns High Cougars down the Olympus in a well played game here Titans on Tuesday. Professional wrestling will be coming to Taylorsville high Friday night as a fund raiser for the schools athletic department. The event, sponsored by the Taylorsville high boosters and promoted through the Western States Championship Wrestling Association, will get under way at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be $5 for general admission and $6 for ringside. The feature match of the evening will Steve Gatorwolf squaring off 581 pound Mr. Destrucagainst tion for the Western States Championship. Lady wrestlers will be on hand as well along with other matches. According to promoters, this is the same group that regularly packs the Salt Palace, stopping for the first time at a high school.
