Show 6 THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, January 29, 1987 AS WE SEE IT Vietnam Vet's 'Platoon' ay Be The Ultimate War Film bv Mark Cartwright & Kelli Lidell (ireen sheet Entertainment Critics SEEN ON THE SCREEN DEPT.: War films, by and large, are written by screenwriters based on what they have read or on accounts which have been related to them by those who were on the scene Oliver Stone (winner of an Oscar and the Writers Guild Award for Midnight Express has written what may be considered the ultimate in war film, entitled Platoon, which is currently playing to packed houses at Mann Theatres Stone, who served in Vietnam in 19(17-6was twice wounded and awarded the Bronze Star, has written and directed a film which gets its power from observing the psyche of the 30 men he served with. Those who came from all walks of life and various areas of the country who were thrust into the terror and madness of war where the camradene they achieved was a necessity to make it from day to day. It isn't one of those "gung-htake that lull at all costs" type of films which we have all come to expect, but an emotional look at the subject which took Stone 10 years to bring to the screen, until Herndale Film Corporation read the script and knew that "this film has to be made. She was active in drama and a student body officer while at Kearns, playing the lead in The Sound of Music. In Mary Poppins she plays one of the maids. Playing the other maid is Mary Williams, who has starred in many lead roles in Murray Arts Council productions including Reno Sweeney in last summers run of Anything Goes. She also dierects plays at Murray high. She resides in the South Cottonwood area and is a former resident of Taylorsville. Alisa Harris, who stars as Alisa Harris in Mary Poppins, has also played several leading roles in Murray Arts Council productions. She was Bonnie in Anything Goes and a stepsister in Cinderella. Harris was graduated from Cottonwood high, is a former resident of Taylorsville and currently lives in Sandy. Mary Poppins is designed to be a memorable event for families, but should have widespread appeal for all ages, City Rep president Thomas W. Parker noted. The show will be done with dialogue and complete costumes, accompanied by the City Rep orchestra. A spokesman for the center said the class is aimed at getting people in shape after the holidays and ready for spring. Purpose of the award is to give recognition to past and present accomplishments by an individual who has helped in the development of human and civil rights for the state and nation. It is given by the Governor of Utah in recognition of Dr. Martin Luther famous civil rights King Jr. leader. Dr. King and the recipient have both demonstrated a social consciousness that will hopefully bring about better relationships between all races, said a spokesman. Mrs. Henry, a Granger resident, retired from the Salt Lake City School District in 1986 and is currently president of the Salt Lake branch NAACP, and holds an honorary doctorate degree of Humane Letters from the University of Utah. She has been a member of numerous boards including the Utah Advisory Committee to the U. S.
