Show We Buried Summer Last Week May It Rest In Peace We buried And the relief that spring brings with her will be far too welcome to induce me to do any work. summer late last week. She died a sudden, violent, though not unexpected, death. I mourn her passing. She leaves behind her so many things yet undone. A basement half cleaned, weight not lost, closets that received only the traditional Iick and a promise, movies not seen. Things that could be done in autumn, but wont be. Autumn brings her own requirements. The beginning of new seasons of theater, football, television. The urge to beat the Christmas rush. Summer took with her short sleeves, casual, crisp cottons, long days and longer evenings. That cool pool of water in my back yard must be covered to await those somnolent days of another summer. Though I used it almost daily, it seems as though that spate of days was far, far too short. to become too fond of autumn, for she will pass even more quickly. And the violence of her death will shock us all. I hesitate therefore Winter has already announced his intention to invade our otherwise perfect world. (Note that winter takes on the masculine pronoun. Its much too vile to be a she. ) In winter I will accomplish less than I did in summer or autumn. Michele Bartmess thing that can happen to us. Without it, life becomes static. Why then do we fight it so? Probably because ft necessitates exiting our comfort zone. One of the amazing things about the human animal is how quickly it can make adjustments. Why just days after we buried summer, there we were enjoying autumn as if she had been with us always. And so it is with our lives. We fight first for change and then against it. When we are in the springtime of our life, we can hardly wait to shed the bonds of parental control But when winter begins to set in, the fight begins anew. I am, you see, destined to go through life only accomplishing half of the things that are listed as musts. The changing of seasons is as good an excuse as any for that flaw in my character. In fact, without the sesonal be changes, foritme would to invent a necessary new set of excuses. Change in our lives is a disruptive force, and yet it is probably the best All through those autumn years we try desperately to ignore the onset of winter. Whereas summers slips softly into autumn, we suddenly awaken to the fact that the season is changing again. And then suddenly it is winter. No matter how valiant the fight, winters onset cannot be deterred. It can, they claim, be enjoyed. In fact, we owe it to ourselves to do so. Though Im not yet there in my life, there are definite signs that summer is being pushed aside by autumn. Can it be coincidental that my feelings for winter grow more disdainful with each passing year? Could it be that It won't be as bad as I think? Is it possible that I will make yet another adjustment? Only time, I fear, will tell. Kiss Me Kate: Calculated To Please Discriminating Tastes Robert Peterson as Fred Graham-Petruchi- o was in great form. The only thing that hasnt changed is that we still have the same president. A few trends I have seen develop during these six years: 11 Experts without portfolios: Think about it. Who are the people who are selling most advice books and what do they know about the subject? Actress Jane Fonda, activist turned activist turned health activist, is the most renowned person in exercise instruction through her video tapes and books. Most of the best selling diet books are written by people m anti-nucle- without accredited nutrition degrees. Questionable parentalism: The "Baby on Board caution signs you can hang in the rear window of your car are offensive to almost everyone. Do they really make you a better parent? Do they really make anyone drive more safely? Michelin tire ads are equally offensive. They make it sound like the only way you can show care for your kids is buying a particular brand of tire. It should raise the question, What kind of tires do the school buses This type of parentalism have? seems to be saying that you can buy concern for your children. 3) Liability insurance increases: Nobody is quite sure whos to blame, but liability insurance has become monster. Athletic on events and community activities are being canceled because liability insurance is too expensive. Whos to blame? - lawyers looking for business, citizens trying to make a quick buck on liability suits or the insurance industry for mismanaging Continued on last page. Teacher to Parent Helping your child succeed by Betty Condie President, Utah Education Association Many parents are in better shape than their kids. On average, girls cant run as fast as girls once did. On average, girls and boys are less fit midway through high school than at the end of eighth grade. s are Many of today's stagnant and sluggish - at best. The apparent reason: Too many youngsters themselves have been stagnant and sluggish - reclining in front of the TV or VCR, sustaining their stagnation with megadoses of salt, sugar and grease. The need for physical fitness skills ,s as much social as physiological. And because physical fitness and mental alertness are related, the need is also intellectual - for greater mental ability and psychological resiliency. An elementary or middle level school with a physical education teacher and adequate scheduling and facilities can offer students these lifetime gifts. But even in schools that lack the services of a teen-ager- physical education teacher, there's still a chance to emphasize fitness. Supervised recess and lunchtime activities can make that time count for fitness. Todays physical education stresses cooperation, not competition. Physical education is not simply athletics. Its things students can carry over into their lives outside school, their later lives: it's development. and its exposure to a range of sports. Competitive team sports are said to build character, but the cooperative brand of physical education achieves the same result - and for a broader range of children. Parents can help preschoolers develop movement skills - hopping, and ease older jumping, skipping students into lifetime sports by eng couraging ball skills, skills, rhythm and dance. Help your children enjoy developing their physical abilities. Success can be even sweeter than candy, and even more exciting than TV. -- - -- rope-skippin- |
