Show As We See It- 5 - THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, Septembers, 1986 New World Should Be 'Making Contact' With Rest Of World by Mark Cartwright & Kelli Lldell Green Sheet Entertainment Critics The number of theatrical releases continues to dwindle as theaters hold over the best of the summer and await the biggies scheduled for NovemberDecember release. With that in mind, were at the way New World surprised Pictures dumped Making Contact into the theaters without the fanfare this film deservps Joey Collins is a who has just lost his father with whom he was very close. So close, in fact, that shortly after the funeral, his toy phone starts ringing and he starts talking to his father. When the kids at school razz Joey about not having a dad, he tells them about the phone conversations and they become unmerciful in their treatment of the poor kid. It seems that Joey has not only made contact, but also has the power to move things simply by thinking about it, surprising not only his mother, but his teacher as well. If thats not enought plot line for you, Joey ventures into the abandoned home of a deceased ventriloquist-magicia- n where he finds a dummy which he takes home and cleans up, only to learn that the dummy is alive and very evil (and you thought only Rodney Dangerfield got no respect). All manner of supernatural things begin to happen until a team of psychic researchers are called in to study Joey who has his hands full coping with thee other kids and the dummy. Making Contact is not a horror film, but rather a spooky adventure boasting a good script which doesnt bog down, good special effects and a cast that plays it straight. On the video scene, the big vote goes to Young Sherlock Holmes, Steven Speilbergs presentation of what might have happened if Holmes and Watson had met in college. Set in the 1800s Young Sherlock Holmes remains extremely faithful the characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, which have been solid hits since their inception. Various people in London have, for no apparent reason, been going mad and finally committing suicide. When one of the victims is a professor that Holmes was fond of, he enlists the help of John Watson, a student and theyre off on their first adventure. As noted, the script by Christopher Cross is terrific and its obvious that everyone involved either did his homework or is a Sherlock Holmes fan, by the distinct eye toward detail to pre-me- Conand execution which we suspect an Doyle would have appreciated. of $19.95. Now, if only George could sing instead of scream, they could make The Happy Yankees. Speaking of New York, and we were, if you havent seen C.H.U.D., which has been in video for a while, we suggest you do so. n Its a fact that there are people who inhabit the cavernous underground sewer and subway passages that run beneath the Big Apple. These people live by their wits and dont want to get involved in any trouble. A reformed criminal running a soup kitchen notices that a dozen of the derelicts he regularly feeds are missing which he reports to the police department. A photographer who did an article on the derelicts learns that one woman tried to steal a cops gun for her brother who also adventure, cult ism, Action, abound special effects and romance in Young Sherlock Holmes, which got lost in the glut of Christmas releases last year, but is now available in video. Its a winner. For the many transplanted New Yorkers and other New York Mets fans, Vestron Video and the Mets have joined forces and released Lets Go Mets, which is an music video featuring Gary Carter, Dwight Gooden, Keith Hernandez, Mookie Wilson, Darryl Strawberry, Manager Dave Johnson and the rest of the amazin Mets. Not only are the players involved, but so are Mayor Ed Koch, the fans at Shea Stadium and what looks like the entire city of New York. Lets Go Mets is 30 minutes with a retail price Stein-brenn- well-know- all-st- lives beneath the city. The big question is why? Through a series of investigations, they learn about the C.H.U.D. (cannibalistic humanoid underground genius at Warner Home Video who decided to release Under The Cherry Moon into video for the Prince-lsum of $79.95 per copy. When it was released in the theaters at $5 a ticket, people stayed away in droves, making it a bomb and hurting Princes feelings. With videos such as Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom and other hit titles coming out at $29.95 and less, $79.95 is ridiculous for a film that just doesnt cut the mustard. Until next week, remember to keep your feet off the seat and the y dwellers). A mutation of the vagrants who must eat flesh to survive. The C.H.U.D. mutations are caused by radioactive waste which the government has stored beneath the city. Daniel Stern of Breaking Away and John Heard (Cat People) star in this one and its a well made horror film where nobody skimped on the budget. This week As We See (introduces our You Have To Be Kidding award, given in deepest sincerity to anyone in the industry who has proven that he or she is capable of coming up with a serious idea, which as got to be a joke.
