It is not within my power to ; remove alcohol from each individual ; who wishes to use it, but it is within ; my power to visit the parents of each ; and all 990 students within the boun- daries of Orchard elementary school to urge them to vote against any candidate for mayor who will not give us a firm commitment for sidewalks running east and west on 3785 South, from 64th West to 72nd West. ; Mayor Maloney made a commit-- ; ment to the community of West he would see Valley, if I that sidewalks be put in on 3785 ; South insuring safe travel for our children and parents this year. Michael R. Embley did not give us ! this promise, yet many chose to vote j for him. Mayor Embley, I ask you, many more children and ; how before you ; parents must suffer allocate funds for our sidewalks? May I remind you, that same democratic system which elected you to office can just as quickly vote you out. ; Mrs. Elizabeth M. Ayala West Valley City management skills and inability to deal with problems, as they arise in city departments. I know firefighters, in general, do not come to .work drunk as he indicated in the public hearing. I know firefighters are not generally immoral. Mr. Newman has seemed to have a great difficulty dealing with the defeat of a personal project and has now lapsed into name calling and irresponsible mud slinging, having run out of valid arguments. When the citizens of West Valley City refused to accept his proposed program for the fire department, he acted in a very reprehensible manner, using vile, inflammatory statements that have neither credence nor worth. I feel very strongly that we, the citizens of West Valley City, deserve actions against the alleged culprits in our fire department or we deserve a public apology from Mr. Newman or action by our City Council to reprimand the man we pay to repre Jay Miles Opinion Issue To the editor, In West Valley this past week, the City Council had the task of choosing between keeping the fire and police service intact or changing to a Public Safety Department. The citizens of WVC had the opportunity to see both sides of the issue, because firefighters and the police officers chose to take a stand, by informing the public of the unfortunate side effects of such a change. The blue ribbon committee gave several recommendations to the city, the most acceptable was fire districts. Why then public safety? Citizen groups formed, letters were written, and public forums were held on the issue. In the spirit of true democracy, May 22, 1986 the City Council made a decision, voted county might have made a similar constituents need and what your mistake. I am a citizen of Salt Lake employees have been saying with County the same as you are. I work such care. To cut cost, have better and spend my hard earned money in coverage, to better utilize equipment and maintain a higher level of West Valley the same as you. Under the constituion, I have the fire protection for the tax dollar in same rights as you do, Mr. Moss, to West Valley City, even with reduced funding. speak out when something is wrong. federal A fire district, including West Because I work with and for the people of West Valley, I am concerned Valley City, Salt Lake City and Salt for their level of protection. Perhaps Lake County, is clearly the most as much as you are. To foist an ex- workable, both politically and pensive, cumbersome, outmoded economically. Should a central fire district be of this great land of ours. Perhaps not far behind? The answer is yes. Mr. Moss, West Valley should be rather than being so critical of opon the leading edge promoting fire should be thankful that position, you your employees care so much for the districts in the county. I for one, people of your city that they are will- would much rather assist you, by speaking out in my City Council for ing to voice an opinion. Now the PSO issue is past, it is fire districts than quibbling over time for you, Mr. Anderson and Mr. your questions, on rights. Winder, to read and listen to what Oliver C. Moore the blue ribbon committee members West Valley firefighter really said in their report, what your with their constituents for the best alternative, to stay with traditional fire and police service. The peoples voice was clearly heard. Yet in the background, City Councilman Duane Moss raised a question. Should employees of the city, firefighters or policemen, have the right to raise a voice of opposition on city matters? Should they have the right to politic in a city they may not pay taxes in? The answer, Mr. Moss, is a clear and crisp yes. The law supports the issue that employees may be involved in the political process. But to help Mr. Moss better understand the issue, not withstanding the law, perhaps I should explain the reasons why we as employees have a right to speak out on local issues. What 91,000 people (the population of West Valley) support bares heavy impact on other towns, cities and counties in Utah. I live in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County. If 91,000 people supported PSOs by your vote, Mr. Moss, perhaps my city or my mzm musif (Sanctis 1 C3 City Hall aKDix&s I To the editor, Recently, I was approached to sign a petition to put the issue of West Valley Citys new city hall location on the ballot. This caused me to do a little digging. The results of this digging tell me that the taxpayers have been taken advantage of by our trusted leaders. The reasons for my statement are: 1. The city paid about $40,000 to have a study made regarding the location of a new City Hall. Granger park was the third rated location for various reasons, one of which was traffic congestion. 2. The current location could be brought up to standard for about $500,000 to $1,000,000, which is a far our leaders cry from the want to spend for the new building. 3. If space is a problem, the city could tell the state to move the court out of the current building, thereby increasing the space available by about Updating the current, paid for, building and moving the court out, we as taxpayers could have a better quality of life with sidewalks and street lighting that currently cannot be done due to lack of funds. This city hall building scheme leads me to believe that our city manager and elected officials have little regard for the tax dollars we work so hard to give them. sent us in an intelligent and mature way. rate A 45" Big Screen TV The Grand Prize will be Given Away to the Last Team with a hand remaining on the Curtis Mathes Television. ram Contest Begins June 13 at 6 p.m. 'til Sat. Newman, city manager of West ' Valley City, owes the members of the West Valley City Fire Depart-- : ment a public apology. ': His blatant and malicious verbal attack leveled at the members of the department, Thursday, May 22nd, at the public council meeting, was un-- founded and untrue. He said, Firefighters were involved in pornography, sex in the stations and drinking while on duty. It is time Mr. Newman quit attack-- , ing the firefighters and put up or shut up. In a letter dated August, 1983, he cleared firefighters of any ; wrongdoing after an investigation i and said, anyone bringing or at-- ; to bring these allegations tempting up for any reason are just trying to discredit the West Valley City Fire Department. Now if Mr. Newman has proof that one firefighter or a group of firefighters have been immoral while on duty, or have come to work intoxicated, then why hasnt something been doen to correct the problem? If activities of this kind are violations of city rules, and are so prevalent in one of his departments, then why has Mr. Newman not acted? It would seem reasonable for him to have fired or at least reprimanded the individual or individuals for their actions. If this has been done, then why did he bring the subject up in such an irresponsible manner in a public hearing? If action has not been taken by Mr. Newman, perhaps he has been covering for someone, or it is he, Mr. Newman, that should be reprimanded or terminated for his ineffective ENTRY FORM r Contest will be held outside under a tent at all 3 Curtis Mathes locations.
