Anchored by sterling performances by four lead Playhouse is singing its swan song. Coupled with the shocking announcement that next years season has been cancelled, and the theater will be used for LDS stake productions in the future, Carousel opened Thursday at the Playhouse. Perhaps more than anything this show underscores the tragedy that decision is for young performers and for audiences. Promised Valley has provided affordable quality theater always suitable for families and has offered performers an outlet for their talents. Both will be sadly lacking in this valley in the future. This final show is a memorable one, especially for the standout performances in lead roles. They are its strength. Brian W. West offers a brilliant performance as Billy Bigelow, the carnival barker who messes up, then makes up for it. His is a winsome Billy. It has strength and power, but we see goodness in him. The performance of his Soliloquy is 7-- 2 9-- 17-1- 7 6 9-- 5-- 3 And finally there is David Spencers Enoch Snow. He is part stuffed shirt and part comedienne and it works oh so well. Like the rest Green Sheet of the leads, he can sing superbly. It is easy to see why the leads are Promised Valley 8-- 4. Taylorsville Babe Ruth League TAYLORSVILLE. The Dodgers to highlight nipped the Cardinals action in the Taylorsville Babe Ruth League. Brett Miller had a double and Brett Seager had a double and two singles to support fine pitchingby Kelly Walker, with relief help from Miller. Jerry Stevenson pitched well in a losing cause. In other action the Braves edged the Pirates as Dustin Zierold had a two-rusingle. Andy Graft also had a key hit. Aaron Nelson and Jason Robinson combined to pitch the Cardinals to a 13-- win over the Giants. Jerry Stevenson had a three-ru- n homer and Justin Stanley, Dunstin Hardcastle and Adam Larson had doubles while Troy Arnold had a key hit. The Orioles downed the Pirates behind a 4x4 effort by Shawn Good, who also had four RBIs. Layne Hansen had a pair of singles and two runs batted in. Clint Martinez and Bradley Houtz were on the mound as the Yankees blanked the Giants 15-Jeff Leatherwood went 3x4, Nic DeLuca had a single and a double and chased home three runs. Brent Hutto added by Michele Bartmess Green Sheet Theater Critic 17-1- 6 12-1- the leads. But they arent the only talented performers. Pat Hughes has a beautiful singing voice which is shown off in Youll Never Walk Alone. Kim Strunk is a superb dancer and her talents are highlighted in The Ballet. The show gets off to a colorful start with the beautiful Carousel Waltz and some excellent technical effects. The major weakness in the show is in what should be the splashy pro- WIA V Its hard to believe that Stacee Sherwood is a high school senior -unless youve seen her before and know of her talents. She brings such maturity to her role of Julie Jordan. Always in control, she plays both the young girl and the older widow with equal ability. Her singing is excellent. duction numbers. They are downplayed, largely because more bodies were needed to make them come to life. This was is especially true in what should be the showstop-pe- r. June Is Bustin Out All Over. The choreography lacks excitement both in conception and performance. But the show works. It bring tears to the eyes as the end approaches. And those lead performances are well worth the price of admission. It will continue at the Playhouse through June 14. For Salt Lake theater lovers, see it now. Unfortunately, its your last chance. The most appealing performance in the production is turned in by Alisa L. Harris as Carrie She is delightful, sings like a dream and brings a great deal of personality to a character that too often gets lost. She is flirtatious and e. energetic and Friday nights audience was indeed responsive to her. 7 n ROPER'S OWN 2 Fowl Meichiiter SUITS t g Summer weight, polywool blends 200 te 240 now n. 8-- 6 a M4WM09 SPORT COATS JwBil BLAZERS rea. 120 to 140 r.
